The Odaw River (or Odawna) is a highly polluted urban watercourse that originates in the Abokobi and Adjankote hills and flows through central Accra into the Korle Lagoon. It is central to Accra’s drainage, but it frequently causes severe flooding and faces major environmental challenges during heavy rains. The most recent rain and flooding occurred on 29 June 2026.

I decided to use some AI landscaping tools to reimagine what a modern Odaw waterway could look like — cleaner, greener, safer, and more people-friendly.
This is not a final engineering design, but a visual prompt for conversation: what if we transformed the Odaw into a functional urban river corridor with improved drainage, landscaped embankments, pedestrian walkways, cycling lanes, public seating, and a more dignified environment for surrounding communities?

Reimagining the Odaw is really about reimagining central Accra: flood resilience, environmental restoration, public space, and urban renewal.

1. British colonial botanical networks introduced Indian almond trees (aborɔfo nkateɛ) into coastal towns in colonial Ghana during the early 1900s to curb soil erosion & flooding.

2. As it absorbs excess water and thrives in flood-prone and waterlogged areas.

3. Although not originally native to Ghana, it became deeply rooted over centuries.

4. Now, the tree that was brought to save the land is itself disappearing. Felled indiscriminately and forgotten.
