READ : The 1995 Uganda Constitution is the Supreme Law of the land; it serves as our guiding manual to which we are all bound. The State does not own it; rather, it encompasses the entirety of the State’s legal guidance.

Our fight for AUTONOMY and INDEPENDENCE is explicitly enshrined in this guiding document, particularly within Article 29(1)(e) on the right to freedom of association and the National Objectives and Directive Principles of State Policy.

To the Attorney General, the Solicitor General, and all those undermining our DOCTRINAL efforts to rescue, rehabilitate and reform our National Bar Association, kindly reflect on sub-paragraphs (v) and (vi) of the Democratic Principles (paragraph II) as well as paragraph V(ii) in the National Objectives and Directive Principles of State Policy:

II(v) All political and civic associations aspiring to manage and direct public affairs shall conform to democratic principles in their internal organization and practice.

II(vi) Civic organizations shall retain their autonomy in pursuit of their declared objectives.

V(ii) The State shall guarantee and respect the independence of nongovernmental organisations which protect and promote human rights.

Don’t we deserve our independence? What does an independent legal practice mean when its leadership is plagued by double standards, bias, disregard for legal integrity; and chronic Colonial Hangovers!

Fellow advocates for independent legal practice, it’s time to awaken from this deep slumber.
