"Anglian Water fined £1.6M for polluting River Brain in Essex."
Over the last 15 years Anglian Water has been found guilty of 79 different environmental offences and already paid almost £5 million in fines. Has any of it made any difference whatsoever? Of course not.
Perhaps later this morning the @CommonsEFRA would like to ask the polluters why.

Thames Water is borrowing £2.4bn at 10% interest so it can keep funding dividends, even though bosses know it won't be able to repay the money when the company goes tits up. This is corrupt and the government should make it clear that taxpayers won't pick up the tab.
From what I'm reading, the government expected the review into mental health diagnoses to say that conditions like ADHD and autism were being overdiagnosed, particularly in young people and then use that as justification for making disability benefits cuts, particularly impacting younger people with mental health conditions.
However, the problem is the review didn't say that, and it also said that work in and of itself should not be seen as a viable solution for everyone. I mean I could have told them all this without the need for the review, but the central point is, they are stuffed because they haven't got the evidential justification that intensive employment support instead of benefits will be effective and not lead to harm to the individual concerned.
That being said, as I have mentioned many times before in the last few years, I'm not against the principle of disabled people and people with mental health conditions working, as long as the work they are doing is good for them and they are fully capable of doing it without any adverse disability -related impacts. My issue is, and always has been that simply assuming that a condition such as ADHD always has mild implications in terms of work capability is both wrong and immensely dangerous. Also, age should not be used as a determining factor in deciding the severity of the impact of a disability or health condition.
Burnham urges officials to come up with more radical options for Thames Water.
Here are some
Enforce laws.
Prosecute execs for harming health, environment.
Cancel licence to operate.
Put TW into special administration.
Nationalise at knockdown price.

Erasmus+ returns in 2027. Brilliant news.
But why should opportunities to live, work and learn across Europe be concentrated in younger years?
Let's restore mutual Freedom of Movement for everyone.

*If* Farage's £5m was illegal and *if* he bought two properties and renovated two others with it, that is money laundering. He obviously hoped nobody would know about it.
Ofcom just appeared in Parliament and got their facts wrong, again...
If we can't trust Ofcom to get their info right when talking to MPs, how can we trust them to deal with media misinformation?
Tonight's Newsnight focused on the 60th anniversary of the Aberfan disaster:
Victoria Derbyshire, "How could anybody think it could be alright to have a quarter of a mile high slurry - that was notorious for sliding - above a school?"
Jeff Edwards, one of the three then 8 year old survivors, "The reason the tips were on there, it was the cheapest land"
My view:
On 21 October 1966, 144 people died in Aberfan, including 116 children.
The tribunal’s finding was unequivocal: blame rested with the National Coal Board. It said the disaster “could and should have been prevented.” Yet no one was prosecuted. Lord Robens, the NCB chairman, offered to resign, but the government refused to accept it. Officials criticised by the tribunal were moved to other work within the Board.
The NCB paid £500 for each child killed. The public had raised around £1.75 million to support the bereaved and the village, but the fund was then required to contribute £150,000 towards clearing the remaining tips above Aberfan. That money was not repaid until 1997.
So the families were left to live with an avoidable loss, a compensation payment many regarded as derisory, and a long fight for accountability.
The inquiry named the institution responsible. But no individual was prosecuted, and even money donated to help the community was used to pay for work that should never have been its burden.
Sheer and utter incompetence. Please explain why this person is still in politics and has suffered no consequences. Even more that she lies on a daily basis about the uptake of welfare for the disabled. Cruelty personified. #COVID19
UK economy is growing, courtesy @Keir_Starmer & @RachelReevesMP, who knew what they were doing & should still be in power.
@andyburnham & @JohnHealey_MP are ignorant & arrogant. Ex BoE chief economist Andy Haldane fears the budget would be aimed at appeasing backbench MPs, not protecting the fragile economy. Financier Jim O'Neill, ex MP & informal adviser to Burnham, agreed.
Burnham is a disaster waiting to happen, as would be true of anyone who came to power through an underhanded grubby coup that involved betrayal & backstabbing en masse. He lacks integrity, lies with mind-boggling ease, is averse to hard work, has surrounded himself with yes-men/women - & doesn't understand the complexities of domestic or international policies.
