Who is @ExpressScripts ?
Oh, you know, just one of the largest pharmacy benefit managers AND also a large mail order pharmacy.
Do you know why independent pharmacy owners are so fed up?
Indulge me for a second…
Let’s imagine all 19,000 or so independent pharmacies in the United States were allowed to join forces and start their own pharmacy benefit manager company, collectively.
Every independent pharmacy would be paid 20-40x as much for prescriptions dispensed at one of our 19,000 locations nationwide, but if you’d rather go to a local @cvspharmacy or @OptumRx mail-order or @ExpressScripts mail-order, You can do that, but those pharmacies will be reimbursed pennies on the dollar for dispensing the same prescriptions.
Patients will also be sent numerous letters and receive many phone calls steering them toward one of the 19,000 independent pharmacies vs. one of our larger competitors.
Furthermore, to sweeten the deal, we would “financially incentivize” patients to make the switch to one of our pharmacies with lesser co-pays (or $0 co-pays) for prescriptions.
Doesn’t that sound like a totally normal, rational, ethical, fair, and reasonable way to conduct business?
If the answer is NO, then you can understand exactly what today’s independent pharmacies are up against…
Because that’s the exact treatment that we have been receiving from the largest pharmacy benefit managers.
