In 1946, Martha Vickers delivered one of the most memorable performances of her career in Howard Hawks’ legendary film noir The Big Sleep.

Starring Humphrey Bogart as private detective Philip Marlowe and Lauren Bacall as Vivian Rutledge, the film was adapted from Raymond Chandler’s 1939 novel and became one of the defining examples of classic Hollywood noir.

Vickers played Carmen Sternwood, Vivian’s younger sister and the troubled daughter of wealthy General Sternwood.

From her very first appearance, Carmen is unpredictable, flirtatious and dangerous, drawing Marlowe deeper into a complicated world of blackmail, murder and deception.

Only in her early twenties when the film was released, Vickers managed to make a striking impression despite sharing the screen with the already formidable pairing of Bogart and Bacall.

Her performance gives Carmen an unsettling mixture of innocence and instability, making it difficult to know whether she is vulnerable, manipulative or considerably more dangerous than she initially appears.

Directed by Howard Hawks, The Big Sleep became famous not only for its shadowy atmosphere and rapid-fire dialogue, but also for its notoriously complicated plot.

Yet the mystery is almost secondary to the film’s characters, chemistry and unmistakable style.

For Vickers, Carmen Sternwood would remain her most celebrated screen role.

Although her Hollywood career never reached the heights many expected after The Big Sleep, her performance ensured her a permanent place in the history of film noir.

► Novelist Raymond Chandler claimed that Martha Vickers gave such an intense performance as Carmen Sternwood that she completely overshadowed Lauren Bacall, and that much of Vickers' performance ended up on the cutting room floor as a result.

► While casting the film, Howard Hawks was impressed by a glamorous photo of model-turned-actress Martha Vickers. She had started acting in horror films at Universal, so he had Warner Bros. buy up her contract and then taught her how to exploit her sexuality to the maximum as the nymphomaniacal Carmen.

After filming had ended, Cary Grant kept the famous UNICA key. A few years later he gave the key to his great friend and co-star Ingrid Bergman, saying that the key had given him luck and hoped it would do the same for her. Many years later, at a tribute to director Alfred Hitchcock, Bergman went off-script and presented the key to him, to his surprise and delight.

Fun fact: In You Were Never Lovelier (1942), Rita Hayworth and Fred Astaire rehearsed many of their elaborate dance routines in a hall on the grounds of Hollywood Cemetery because Columbia’s regular rehearsal spaces were occupied. They reportedly had to stop the music and tapping whenever funeral processions passed nearby.

Even more interesting from an acting/performance perspective: Hayworth was a highly trained dancer — her father was dancer Eduardo Cansino — and Astaire was extremely impressed by her ability. He later described Hayworth as his favourite on-screen dancing partner. You Were Never Lovelier (1942) was their second and final film together, following You’ll Never Get Rich (1941).

And there’s also another interesting fact about Astaire in this film: his character (Bob Davis) says he’s from Omaha, Nebraska— which was Fred Astaire’s actual birthplace.

Sylvester Stallone is one of the most driven, motivated humans I’ve ever seen in my life. I can’t say I align with many of Stallone’s personal beliefs, especially at this juncture of his life, but I don’t know if there will ever be a world where Stallone doesn’t inspire me. This man willed his way to success. He created his success out of nothing. I don’t care who you are or where you’re from, you can draw inspiration from Stallone’s story too. This is honestly what Cinema is all about.

Il a fait construire son tombeau dix ans avant de mourir. Une simple dalle, sans nom, face au grand large.

Sur un rocher que la mer isole à marée haute, au large de Saint-Malo.

Il est né tout près, sur cette côte, dernier d'une famille de dix enfants. Enfant, il grandit dans un château breton silencieux et glacé, seul avec une sœur et ses rêveries.

La Révolution éclate. Il embarque pour l'Amérique, remonte des forêts sans fin, puis rentre se battre, est blessé, et s'exile à Londres. Il y connaît la misère, traduit des textes pour ne pas mourir de faim.

De cette détresse, il tire un grand livre qui le rend célèbre dans toute l'Europe, « Le Génie du christianisme ». Puis un court récit, « René », dont le héros mélancolique va inspirer toute une génération d'écrivains romantiques.

La gloire venue, il devient ministre des Affaires étrangères, ambassadeur, adulé un jour, disgracié le lendemain. Il passe sa vie à se brouiller avec les puissants.

Il finit pauvre, vendant d'avance ses souvenirs pour rembourser ses dettes. Des souvenirs qu'il interdit de publier avant sa mort, et qu'il intitule « Mémoires d'outre-tombe ». Une parole d'après la tombe.

Né le 4 septembre 1768, il repose aujourd'hui exactement là où il l'avait décidé. François-René de Chateaubriand.

Sur son rocher, aucune pierre ne porte son nom. Un peu plus loin seulement, cette phrase pour le passant : « un grand écrivain français a voulu reposer ici pour n'y entendre que la mer et le vent ».

Vingt ans avant de mourir, Chateaubriand a choisi sa tombe.

Pas un caveau. Pas une cathédrale. Un rocher battu par les vagues, au large de Saint-Malo.

François-René de Chateaubriand est né malouin, bercé par les tempêtes de la côte bretonne. Devenu l'un des plus grands écrivains de France, celui qui a inventé le vague à l'âme romantique, il n'a jamais oublié le bruit de la mer de son enfance.

Alors il a demandé une chose étrange à sa ville. Un bout de l'îlot du Grand Bé, ce rocher qu'on rejoint à pied seulement à marée basse. Pour y dormir face à l'océan.

La ville a d'abord refusé. Puis a cédé.

Il meurt le 4 juillet 1848. On l'enterre là, exactement comme il le voulait. Une simple dalle, une croix. Et surtout, aucun nom gravé.

Une seule phrase, sur le mur derrière : "Un grand écrivain a voulu reposer ici pour n'y entendre que la mer et le vent."

Aujourd'hui, la tombe penche. La falaise s'effrite, rongée par les vagues. Le rocher qu'il avait choisi pour l'éternité menace de l'emporter.

Comme si la mer venait enfin le rechercher.
