It is hard to imagine Essar without Mehraji.

A doyen of the steel industry, he stood with us for nearly three decades through defining moments. Clear in his thinking, firm in his conviction and always generous with his guidance.

I grew up watching Papa and Mehraji build our steel business together, brick by brick.

To me, he was a mentor, a guide and a friend. Someone I could always turn to. Steady, practical and deeply committed to what he believed in.

You will be deeply missed, Mehraji.

Have a look at this video. Looks like any other day. An Indigo pilot welcomes his father to his plane.

Except that the father and son are some of the most exceptional people I have met. The father is a retired Navy Chief and the son, a retired naval pilot.

It takes me back to 2004. My absence from the air squadron for sailing was becoming prominent, so much so that it had started effecting its operations in a small way.

The outgoing and incoming Senior Pilots sat me down in the squadron’s breakfast room and told me in no uncertain terms that I could either fly or sail, but not both, and I had to decide right there. I was 25 years old, listening to them explain the pros and cons of sports, its (negative) impact on career, and the chances of injuries. But if things worked out, there was no limit.

I gathered the courage to tell them that I needed time to decide. How much? They asked.

I asked for at least two years. “Granted”, the new Senior Pilot said in his signature booming voice, “but you won’t get any annual leave. And after those two years if you come and tell me that you have become the Navy Champion, I’ll personally take charge of you (mildly put).”
