My brother broke his fingers during a football game few days back. We went to a hospital nearby and got an XRay done. K-wire Surgery was suggested.
He has a very good comprehensive Health Insurance Policy which covers everything. Day Care & Non Consumables as well.
So yesterday, he went to one of the Top Hospitals in our city to meet another Doctor to consult & get the surgery done.
The hospital suggested to stay for 24 hours in a Private Room (since his insurance was entitled to it). They said that they would raise a Bill of around 3 Lakh for the same. They also mentioned that he would have to pay around 10% for Non Consumables.
He immediately called me. I told him two things:
1. You can use Day Care facility. If procedure is more than 2 hours, you do not need to be hospitalized for 24 hours. Please consult the doctor for the same.
2. We have already paid for Non Consumables in our Policy. So you do not pay a single Rupee for it. Inform the hospital that you know these things. Share your policy copy with them.
My brother asked the doctor if hospitalization is necessary. The doctor said that we need not stay back. My brother opted for a General Ward because he was not going to spend the night.
Once the hospital came to know that we are AWARE of all this, they raised an approval for 2 Lakh (instead of 3 Lakh) for General Ward + Stay (inspite of we stressing that we won't stay back)
They got a pre Authorization for ₹1.6 Lakh in few minutes.
Today morning my brother went to the hospital at 6 AM. By 9 AM surgery began. By 9.30 AM it was done. He woke up sometime later due to Anaesthesia. He was shifted to the General Ward.
The Hospital raised the Final Bill of ₹121556 (since it was Day Care and we didn't stay). I think there was some Policy Discount on that and it came to around ₹114786.
The Insurance Company just approved the bill of ₹114786 now. We had to pay ZERO to the Hospital.
I am typing this as my Brother is getting ready to go home now. Been a long day. We will claim our Pre Hospitalization Expenses later as Cash Reimbursement.
My learnings:
1. Ensure your policy has Day Care Treatments. You can save time, money & energy. Use the 2 hour Day Care facility as much as you can. Hospitals would always push for hospitalization to charge more. I am not saying that this is always the case. Use your own discretion and the doctor's advice. In this case, hospital was pushing for hospitalization, but doctor suggested that day care was enough. Always ask. Ask questions.
2. Ensure that Non Consumables is part of your cover. It is worth it. It's a simple rider which you need to take while taking a policy. Take the best Non Consumables rider.

We are all only one hospital bill away from poverty 🔥🔥🔥
I am also a shareholder of my Insurance Company. It is Listed Company.
I am happy that they paid for it. I am happy that Hospital didn't get a Huge Amount for the Surgery by making us Stay for a Night.

I recently came across data on who we spend our time with over the course of our lives.
The insights are simultaneously inspiring and depressing.
Here are 6 graphs everyone needs to see:
If you own a telescope, spread the love. I just spent the whole night showing trick-or-treaters Saturn and Jupiter. Watching them (and their parents) suddenly realize space is quite accessible is incredibly gratifying. Space is up there waiting for everyone to discover it.
What Gen Z & even millennials don't think about enough is that the retirement age is dropping fast due to technological progress & life expectancy going up due to medical progress.
In 20 years, retirement could be at 50 & life expectancy at 80. How do you fund the 30 years? 1/5
