#MiamiMakeoverMonday
Honored to moderate this thoughtful conversation with @CityofMiami Commissoner @ralphrosado305 and Commissioner @Damianpardo8 at the 2026 @APAFlorida Annual Conference. Land use, affordable housing, mobility, public service were all discussed at length.
A city’s momentum is usually a decade+ of people being curious.
Miami has a lot of those people.
For a decade, a group of us traveled to other cities together to explore and learn @matthaggman@rmoas@LABuchananESQ@melmedina305@ralphrosado305@rsm@cksopher@cLavernia@yeswecaines and many others who care deeply about where our hometown was headed.
Cleveland.
Pittsburgh.
Raleigh-Durham.
The Quad Cities.
Indianapolis.
Greenville.
New Orleans.
Nashville.
We went to listen and learn. To understand how civic and business leaders were reckoning with their challenges and opportunities. What was working, what was proving harder than expected, and what lessons we could bring home.
Because a city can be having a breakout moment while still having a hell of a lot to figure out.
We also benefited enormously from
@Richard_Florida’s insights, especially during his residency at @FIU
Back when @FrancisSuarez was running for mayor, he told me he wanted to bring that national ForwardCities gathering to Miami in his first year.
And we did. (Thx @knightfdn!)
This photo is from that conference in fall 2018. Eight years ago.
It captures a chapter of Miami’s story that deserves more attention: people across institutions, neighborhoods and businesses learning how to build a stronger city together.
And a shout out to @rubenharris, a young founder who attended that Miami summit and has since built two companies here: Career Karma and @outrivalAI
You appreciate those connections differently eight years later.
Funny enough, one of our earlier trips took us to Pittsburgh and @CarnegieMellon
That visit hits a little differently these days.
This week, Austin business leaders are visiting Miami. Another group of people doing what we did: showing up with questions, listening and learning from another city’s experience.
That’s how these movements grow. Relationships deepen over years. People share what they’ve learned and find reasons to build together.
I’m proud as hell of Miami’s momentum. And the more attention our successes receive, the more seriously we should take the challenges (housing/transit/resilience/affordability). A city’s progress has to mean something to the people trying to build a life here.
This is the boring, unsexy work of civic and city building. Much of it happens far away from the spotlight.
Cities need people willing to do that work for years before anyone thinks to call it a movement.

A new park is on the way! 🌳
Auburndale is a 100-year-old neighborhood that has never had its own park.
Today marks the start of a transformation as demolition begins on a structure that was deemed unsafe in the neighborhood and that will soon be a park for all to enjoy.
My goal is simple: a park within a 10-minute walk for every District 4 resident. Now, we are one step closer.

¡Un nuevo parque está en camino! 🌳
At our annual Legislative Luncheon honoring elected officials, Miami Lighthouse Academy students sang "Yankee Doodle" for our special guests, and @SenatorAMR presented a check from @HealthyFla supporting our Florida Heiken Children's Vision Program! 👓👏 https://t.co/5RwDC4A9O5
