In @the_hindu today, I analyse India’s research deficit, call for a transformation of approach and urge the private sector to play a bigger part in research and development, instead of leaving everything to the government and the public sector:
Dr. Ashish Lele, Chair-High level Task Force & Director, @csir_ncl, emphasized tackling hard-to-abate sector emissions through stronger #CCUS capabilities. With R&D on advanced materials & new technologies @IndiaDST is driving the shift from lab to large-scale climate solutions.
The Liquid Helium Facility, a significant step toward reducing dependence on imports and enabling affordable, cutting-edge cryogenic research, was also inaugurated by the Hon’ble Minister.
Our TPUs are headed to space!
Inspired by our history of moonshots, from quantum computing to autonomous driving, Project Suncatcher is exploring how we could one day build scalable ML compute systems in space, harnessing more of the sun’s power (which emits more power than 100 trillion times humanity’s total electricity production).
Like any moonshot, it’s going to require us to solve a lot of complex engineering challenges. Early research shows our Trillium-generation TPUs (our tensor processing units, purpose-built for AI) survived without damage when tested in a particle accelerator to simulate low-earth orbit levels of radiation. However, significant challenges still remain like thermal management and on-orbit system reliability.
More testing and breakthroughs will be needed as we count down to launch two prototype satellites with @planet by early 2027, our next milestone of many. Excited for us to be a part of all the innovation happening in (this) space!
Congratulations India, @isro has successfully launched the heaviest GEO communication satellite from Indian soil. The Indian space sector is soaring high to provide valuable services to the user community in and around the Indian region.

A breakthrough has been achieved by demonstrating quantum entanglement based communication in an experimental setup through DRDO-Industry-Academia Centre of Excellence (DIA-CoE), IIT Delhi. The free-space quantum secure communication using quantum entanglement over a distance of more than one km was shown via a free-space optical link established on the IIT Delhi campus.

The Union Cabinet, chaired by Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi, has approved One Nation One Subscription, a new Central Sector Scheme for providing country-wide access to scholarly research articles and journal publication. Steered by the Department of Higher Education and the Office of the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India, the scheme will be administered through a simple, user friendly and fully digital process. There will be a “One Nation One Subscription” facility for the government higher education institutions and R&D laboratories of the central government.
This initiative is in line with the goals of Viksitbharat@2047, National Education Policy (NEP) 2020 and Anusandhan National Research Foundation (ANRF). The initiative will expand access to scholarly journals to a vast diaspora of students, faculty, researchers and scientists of all disciplines, including those in tier 2 and tier 3 cities, thereby promoting core as well as interdisciplinary research in the country. The ANRF will periodically review the usage of One Nation One Subscription and publications of Indian authors of these institutions.

Union Cabinet, chaired by PM Shri Narendra Modi, today approved the introduction of the National Research Foundation (NRF) Bill 2023 in Parliament. NRF’s functioning will be governed by an Executive Council chaired by the Principal Scientific Adviser to the Government of India.
From Prof_ManojDhar, Director AcSIR:
Happy to share that Academy of Scientific and Innovative Research (AcSIR) has been ranked 12th in NIRF Ranking 2023 under “Research Institutions category”. Many Many congratulations to the Hon’ble Chancellor & DG CSIR Dr. N Kalaiselvi, former Directors AcSIR, Dr. R. S. Sangwan, Dr. Ajay Dhar, All Directors of CSIR laboratories (Academic Centres) and Non-CSIR laboratories(Associate Academic Centres), AcSIR Faculty members, Coordinators, Students, Alumni and staff members of AcSIR Headquarters and all Academic Centres, for this stupendous achievement. I seek continued support of all of you; in further raising the standards and your active contribution towards our efforts in bringing greater excellence in research outcomes. Best wishes. @DrJitendraSingh@DrNKalaiselvi@ProfSangwan@Prof_ManojDhar@CSIR_IND
The new mission targets developing intermediate-scale quantum computers with 20-50 physical qubits (in 3 yrs), 50-100 physical qubits (in 5 yrs) & 50-1000 physical qubits (in 8 yrs) in various platforms like superconducting & photonic technology. #NQM
India 🇮🇳 achieved it!
