Did a consulting call today with a 36-year-old @jxnlco U.S. Representative who earns $174k annually in Congress.
D.C.-based. Great office. Access to the Capitol’s exclusive gym.
But here’s the catch: he’s been following my blog for almost a year. Watches Nancy Pelosi casually pocket millions trading stock futures between votes. Notices colleagues suddenly turning into Wall Street prodigies, earning fortunes from conveniently timed stock picks.
This is the hardest pivot to make.
He’s earning about $84/hour to shake hands, pass laws, and pretend to read 2,000-page bills. Safe job. Impressive title. But capped. Even in senior leadership roles, he’s stuck swapping prestige for a fixed paycheck.
Meanwhile, he sees fellow representatives miraculously outperform Warren Buffett, securing seven-figure returns on “perfectly legal” insider-adjacent trades. Former congressmen retire, write a memoir no one reads, and somehow still pull massive consulting fees.
Golden handcuffs, congressional style.
The cruel irony? His insider experience—knowing which legislation will quietly boost certain companies—is exactly what would make him incredibly profitable outside politics. Yet giving up his cushy seat in Congress seems unimaginable, even if the upside might dwarf her current pay.
It takes serious guts to walk away from guaranteed applause at fundraisers to bet on your own trading or consulting skills—especially when the payoff could easily hit seven figures.
And it’s nearly impossible to build genuine wealth (the kind that doesn’t vanish when you lose an election) unless you ditch Capitol Hill for something more entrepreneurial.
Those who actually make this jump? They start subtly tweeting stock advice while still in office, build credibility with conveniently timed trades, and then announce they’re leaving Congress for a think-tank that pays five times their salary.
Then they officially leap.
But most stay comfy at $174k. And comfy rarely creates generational wealth.
Difficult stuff.
I did a consulting call today with a 33 year old guy @sweatystartup who makes $150k a year at a fully remote job.
30-40 hrs a week. 2 kids + wife.
This is a really tough spot to be in.
Makes $2k a month more than he spends every month.
Zero chance at long term wealth but too easy and profitable to leave.
Golden handcuffs.
It takes a serious level of ambition to get out of this situation and go buy or start a company.
It’s hard to get excited about scraping and fixing toilets or power washing sidewalks when you make $75 an hour at your day job.
And it’s impossible to feel comfortable buying a company if you don’t start out lower and work your way up (with that stuff that isn’t exciting when you get a taste of decent money).
Difficult stuff.
@fmfclips What’s the basis?
No way a 15’ 5k (3:00/km or 4:50/mi) equates to a ~78 VO2 max
Maths: VO2max= (22.351*4) - 11.288
= 89.404 - 11.288 = 78.116
@soy_arcalle@Higuero_JC Por favor @teledeporte llamar a Higuero para comentar los JJOO, con él nos enteramos de todo y es el que mejor cuenta lo que pasa y siente un atleta en la pista.
while i personally don't run, i've heard more people than i can count say that @PitchandrunNYC community has made a serious impact on their mental (and physical) health for the better (and they meet 2x/week!)
