As the blatant abuse and misuse of SC/ST is wide open and palpable to countless people now with recent developments, I would like you to check out work of @Shubham_fd who has been working on this issue for years now.

Stories he has reported are nothing less than HORROR. Actual criminals have used this act to force victims to compromise. Compensation under this law has become a business for so many families and their advocates. One case can fetch anything from 5-10 Lacs.

SC/ST act misuse is mindboggling. We have seen even matrimonial disputes where boy went against his family to marry a girl he was in love with and later if marriage broke down how entire family was implicated under the act.

Please know that the law is extremely draconian, just your name in FIR is sufficient for you to be arrested and bail can be a far fetched dream

Hope we have more researchers and journalists looking at horrendous abuse of this section

I strongly oppose the charges against Prof. Suryanarayana Doolla of IIT Bombay under the SC/ST (Prevention of Atrocities) Act.

My background: I belong to the Devendra Kula Vellalar (DKV) community, classified as SC. I grew up in deep rural poverty and witnessed the suffering of my people first-hand. I was educated thanks to broad-minded people from many communities.

I studied Electronics at NIT Tiruchirappalli, worked at C-DOT Bengaluru, and then at Intel in India and the US, where I rose to Engineering Director and Senior Silicon Architect, responsible for high-speed interconnects vital to modern CPUs and GPUs. I hold multiple patents in this field.

I share this to make clear that I know what it means to come from an SC community and rise through hard work and commitment.

Our DKV community has taken a principled, voluntary stand not to file SC/ST cases against anyone. We have seen how cases under this Act are weaponised, and how that deepens enmity on the ground.

On that basis, I oppose the misuse of this Act in this case. The case against Prof. Doolla must be withdrawn. This matters for the future of SC/ST students and for our nation.

Are people aware of what is happening in the new Nalanda university? I have received a very unsettling mail from a student studying there.

He says "I am approaching you in a desperate attempt to find a way to somehow dismantle the misinformation and false narratives being propagated. While the central government claims this new structure to be the 'revival' of ancient Nalanda University, nothing could be further from the truth."

It's a long email, so I am just listing the important points.

1. He alleges that one professor K.T. Sarao delivered a talk to the whole university on how Brahmins/Hindus might have burnt the ancient Nalanda, after a conflict between Buddhist monks and Brahmins. The prof also conjectured that another possibility could be that Khilji mistook the ancient university for a fort and similarly dressed monks as soldiers; hence he might have mistakenly attacked the university.

2. He alleges that another professor, one Shailendra Raj Mehta, who visited the University couple of days back said in his lecture that the ancient Nalanda was purely Buddhist, as there was no system of building education institutes in Hindu tradition.

3. Prof Mehta also allegedly claimed that the traditions of Vaada and Samvaada were unique to ancient Nalanda, as earlier Hindus had no such tradition.

4. He alleges that one Prof Pranshu Samdarshi in a lecture stated that Upanishads were written after the emergence of Buddhism, and he quoted some western scholar.

5. Prof Pranshu Samdarshi also allegedly claimed that since Hindus could not defend their philosophical position against Buddhist Shunyata, they came up with Advaita Vedanta.

Lastly, the student has informed me that all the classes on Buddhist studies are being taught by monks and nuns. However, Hindu studies are being taught by profs who have no expertise in Hinduism or Vedanta.

I am deeply disappointed. If the new Nalanda is truly meant to revive the spirit of the ancient Nalanda, then it must revive its intellectual honesty as well. A university worthy of that name should be a place of Vaada where competing interpretations are examined against texts, inscriptions, archaeology and historical evidence, not presented to students as settled fact merely because they diminish the Hindu intellectual tradition.

Buddhism deserves to be taught by those who know it deeply and sympathetically; Hindu traditions deserve exactly the same scholarly seriousness.

A government-funded institution cannot call itself a civilizational revival while allowing one tradition to speak in its own voice and requiring another to be explained largely through the assumptions of its critics. If these allegations are accurate, the question that must be asked is - what exactly is being revived at Nalanda?

The SC/ST Atrocities Act, by its very design, encourages misuse rather than genuine grievance redressal.

1. In a country where people kill each other over few hundred rupees, offering 1,00,000 rupees simply for filing a case under this Act, for offenses as minor as verbal abuse, creates a obvious perverse incentive. Up to 50% of this amount is disbursed upon the filing of the FIR alone, requiring no prior investigation. Another 25% is paid when the chargesheet is filed. The best part is, if the case is later proven false, the compensation is not automatically recovered. How could this setup not encourage misuse?

2. There is no requirement for a preliminary inquiry. Someone makes a complaint, and you are arrested, that's it. With anticipatory bail explicitly barred, you are left entirely at the mercy of the legal system. Depending on your financial resources, getting bail can take anywhere from a few days to many years; a man in UP spent 20 years in jail before being acquitted of false charges. While defenders of the law argue that the innocent will eventually be freed, the process itself becomes the punishment. Why should innocent individuals endure humiliation and severe mental, physical, financial, and social hardship in the name of skewed social justice?

3. There are virtually no consequences for deliberate false accusations. A complainant can fabricate allegations, land an innocent person in prison, collect govt compensation, be exposed as a liar in court, and still face zero accountability. Instead, they can simply play the victim, claiming that the justice system fails the marginalized.

This framework has spawned a lucrative extortion ecosystem. Syndicates exploit the threat of non-bailable arrest to blackmail citizens, business owners, and public officials. When unverified cash payouts, absolute immunity, and guaranteed incarceration align, a law designed to shield the vulnerable inevitably becomes a tool for institutionalized extortion.
