हनुमानजी को बजरंगबली क्यों कहते हैं?

शब्द "बजरंग", जो हमारी संस्कृति में घुल मिल गया है, वास्तव में मूल संस्कृत शब्द का अपभ्रंश है। अपभ्रंश उसे कहा जाता है जो समय के साथ साथ स्थानीय भाषा में परिणत हो जाता है।

उदाहरण के लिए भागलपुर में एक स्थान है "बौंसी"। ये वो स्थान है जहाँ समुद्र मंथन हुआ था और उसका मूल नाम था "वासुकि", जो नागराज वासुकि के नाम पर पड़ा था। किंतु समय के साथ आज वो "वासुकि" नाम अंगिका भाषा में "बौंसी" हो गया है।

कुछ ऐसा ही हुआ है हनुमान जी के नाम के साथ। रामायण कथा के अनुसार जब मारुति (उनका वास्तविक नाम) सूर्य को निगलने का प्रयास कर रहे थे तब सूर्य की रक्षा हेतु देवराज इंद्र ने उनपर वज्र से प्रहार किया।

इससे मारुति की ठुड्डी टूट गयी और वे मूर्छित हो पृथ्वी पर आ गिरे। जब पवनदेव ने अपने औरस पुत्र की ये दशा देखी तो उन्होंने प्राण वायु का संचार रोक दिया। तब ब्रह्माजी ने उन्हें ऐसा करने से मना किया और प्राणवायु का प्रवाह आरंभ करने को कहा।

इसपर पवनदेव ने अपने पुत्र पर अनुग्रह करने की प्रार्थना की। तब ब्रह्मदेव के आदेश पर लगभग सभी प्रमुख देवताओं ने उन्हें कुछ ना कुछ वरदान दिया। उनमें से एक वरदान देवराज इंद्र ने भी दिया।

चूंकि उनके वज्र से मारुति की ठुड्डी (संस्कृत में "हनु") टूटी थी इसी कारण उनका एक नाम हनुमान प्रसिद्ध हुआ।

इसके अतिरिक्त इंद्रदेव ने हनुमान से कहा कि उनका शरीर वज्र के समान हो जाएगा ताकि उनपर किसी अस्त्र-शस्त्र का असर ना हो। तभी से उनका एक नाम "वज्रांग" (वज्र + अंग), अर्थात वज्र के समान अंगों वाला पड़ गया।

समय के साथ यही "वज्रांग" शब्द अपभ्रंश होकर "बजरंग" हो गया। मूल वाल्मीकि रामायण में आपको "बजरंग बली" शब्द नही मिलेगा। वहाँ मारुति अथवा हनुमान का ही प्रयोग किया गया है।

बजरंग शब्द को प्रसिद्ध करने का श्रेय जाता है गोस्वामी तुलसीदास को। जब उन्होंने अवधी भाषा में श्री रामचरितमानस लिखी तब उन्होंने ही पहली बार वज्रांग को स्थानीय अवधी भाषा में बजरंग लिखा।

इसी कारण हनुमान का एक नाम "बजरंग बली" प्रसिद्ध हुआ जिसका अर्थ होता है वज्र के समान बल वाला।

तो वास्तव में बजरंग मूल शब्द वज्रांग का अपभ्रंश है और इसे जनमानस में प्रसिद्ध करने का श्रेय जाता है गोस्वामी तुलसीदास को।
