The DeFi RPC space is extremely centralised and systemic, and no one is talking about it.

For any trade on Uniswap, or a leveraged loop on Aave you need blockchain data.

For eg, does Alice have enough money for the tx? The Uniswap UI will "check the chain" and then approve.

Does this governance vote have enough support? Aragon UI will "check the chain" and then approve.

But neither Uniswap nor Aragon store blockchain data. In the case of most dApps, this is outsourced to providers like Infura or Alchemy. They account for most of the RPC market.

This is quite dangerous since if they're down, the entire dApp space is dysfunctional. Even worse, imagine a scenario like this:

There is a contentious governance proposal to send 30% of DAO's treasury funds to Sifu and it's being voted on on @AragonProject. 99% of token holders vote against it.

In theory, if Aragon only used Infura, it would completely rely on Infura to count the onchain vote. If someone hacked Infura, it could send Aragon the wrong data to make it look like the vote was positive. This would lead to 30% of funds being lost in a malicious governance attack.

So what is the solution? RPC Aggregation and Data Verification.

1. You aggregate data providers with multiple servers distributed across geographies. Additionally, implement a "quadratic" dynamic whereby no one node can capture all the RPC data consumption.

The effect? Data providers get a predictable median consumption and less marketing overhead as the aggregator constantly channels flows.

Data consumers get 100% uptime and crucially much lower centralisation risk. Even better, you can use this aggregator as a fallback for the cost of 0 instead of 1-10k usd a month.

Why free? Because data providers are plugged into the aggregator anyway and are happy to capture the flow.

2. Data verification module. To avoid malicious data (like in the governance attack case), you request data from 5 (or any nr of) different providers and get the result provided by 3/5 of RPC nodes.

The only player I have seen in this space with the technical ability to pull this off is @drpcorg. Full disclosure: I met @constantine_rm at a dinner which ended up with him educating me on the issue several meetings later.

I am not in any way invested in DRPC, advising it etc. I just think this issue is extremely important and someone is finally tackling it
