1/2 For Pollinator Week this year Bee City Brandon is doing something special. We've chosen three different bees to compete against each other to become the Official Bee of Brandon! But it is up to Brandonites to decide who will represent us.
Looking forward to joining @ManitobaIBA this Thursday to speak about Manitoba's spectacular #prairies and @NCC_CNC's grassland conservation work in southwestern Manitoba, while brushing up on some ID skills!
Silky Townsend-daisy (Townsendia exscapa) on a dry mixed-grass #prairie site in SW Manitoba conserved by @NCC_CNC. Considered rare in MB, this hardy species is typically associated with sparsely vegetated sandy or gravelly prairies.
The Prairie crocuses were definitely stealing the show, but they weren't the only wildflowers blooming in some sandy mixed-grass praire near Brandon, Mb today!
Seems that Silky Prairie Clover is the place to 'bee' @NCC_CNC MB's Lauder Sandhills project. A Threatened species in Manitoba, it occurs in partially stabilized & open sand prairies, which require some disturbance, such as grazing/fire, to maintain appropriate habitat conditions
Western Spiderwort (Tradescantia occidentalis) is listed as Threatened both federally & in Manitoba. In MB it only occurs in 2 sandhill complexes, on partially stabilized #prairie slopes with some open sand. Their beautiful flowers only last a few hours! #SAR
Three-flowered avens (Prairie smoke) giving the prairies around Shilo, Mb a bit of a sparkle as the sun drops, but the bees are far too busy to notice #PollinatorWeek
After some challenges, @NCC_CNC#MB's 2nd & 3rd Motus wildlife tracking towers installed @ Plum Lakes & Whitewater Lake in partnership w/ @environnementca@BirdsCanada @BSC_Manitoba @ManitobaIBA@WSRCD Excited to collect key data needed to inform effective shorebird conservation!
MOTUS tower installation by @NCC_CNC staff underway near Oak Lake! Part of project with @BSC_Manitoba, @ManitobaIBA, @environmentca & @WSRCD to monitor & learn more about shorebird migration & distribution in SW Manitoba! Thanks to @BattlefieldCat for the Boom rental donation.
