Just a reminder to every athlete who feels overlooked or not yet where they want to be … don’t stop working.
Two of the three players from the state of Kansas that were selected in this week’s NFL Draft had zero Power 4 offers coming out of high school.
Sam Hecht (Mill Valley) and Malik Benson (Lansing) were both All-State talents and very well known names, but still overlooked in the recruiting process.
Hecht developed into a 5th-round NFL Draft pick to Carolina after walking on at Kansas State where he developed into a starting lineman and added 50 pounds to his frame. Benson, a freak track and field athlete with a 25’ long jump, took the JUCO route at Hutch, then earned opportunities at three different Division I programs (Alabama, Florida State, Oregon), continuing to develop until he reached the NFL Draft as well in the 6th round to the Raiders.
Even Titans 7th rounder Jaren Kanak (Hays HS), who was highly recruited out of high school with FBS offers as a linebacker/athlete, still had to adapt, making a position change as a senior from linebacker to tight end before becoming a draft pick.
Just because you may not be the best player, highest-rated recruit, or top prospect at 16 or 17 doesn’t mean you can’t become a completely different player by 21 or 22.
Recruiting rankings measure one moment in time. They do not always measure where you’re capable of going.
Where you start doesn’t have to be where you finish. Development, persistence, adaptability, and work ethic still matter. #sportsinkansas
