Supporting efforts to reinstate, upgrade and futureproof railways to deliver #ModalShiftToRail in the 21st Century.
Still can't beat a proper steam engine!
@transportgovuk surely to encourage necessary #ModalShiftToRail to meet #NetZero targets, railway journeys need to be competitive with the car?
#Covid notwithstanding, fares need to decrease.
Having scared the majority of users away, need incentive to return!
#NotRocketScience
Regulated rail fares (those the government controls) will not rise as usual in January but will go up 2.6% on March 1 2021. That's likely to be just as the railway will be hoping to recover 2020's lost passengers.
@peak_chair There would be fewer road users, less traffic noise and lower carbon emissions if more visitors to the beautiful @peakdistrict could travel by rail. An open and shut case for @transportgovuk#RestoringYourRailway, surely?
Yet more support for you @PeaksDalesRail and @MEMRAP1!
Instigated by visionary leaders, more welcome #ModalShiftToRail helping to take HGVs transporting aggregates off our roads and improving our quality of life and air quality... as well as reducing greenhouse gas emissions...
Visionary leaders are taking proactive steps to help achieve HMG's #NetZero emissions target @chhcalling
As #ModalShiftToRail is the key, so decarbonising transport in England will similarly require railway electrification, new railways, & reopened railways e.g. @PeaksDalesRail
This is exactly the sort of effect a well planned reopening can have. #NorthernRoute will achieve similar for a huge area of Devon and Cornwall, as well as providing a freight-friendly, resilient addition to the coastal main line.
Quick update here which is that with help from our many friends, we're taking a detailed and final look at speed profiles for #NorthernRoute. If we're right, it's going to be VERY competitive on journey times with road to Ply and Exeter from Tav and Oke...
We want to see a 'Head Out to Help Out' campaign launched by government to encourage passengers back onto trains👉https://t.co/wrJc34XOOZ
@TF_davidS on @BBCBreakfast with our call to government 👇
"We are talking about... regular every day steam in the working timetable as ‘Q paths’, even for the day-out excursions, with the blessing of Network Rail."
This is the integration the DfT was seeking, and is a model also proposed by @PeaksDalesRail

@RailwayMuseum@YorkshireMuseum It would be more TRAINmendous if Mallard was actually in steam not simply a museum piece... Probably quite good for UK tourism to be able to travel on a train hauled by the world's fastest steam locomotive too... #BuildBackBetter#TremendousTransport
"Connectivity has a huge influence on all of our lives. It dictates the education we receive, the people we meet, the job we secure and, ultimately, our economic potential." https://t.co/Hx3c1P1BQJ
@PeaksDalesRail & @MEMRAP1 aim to reinstate the East Midlands-Manchester railway.

Check out the list of 50 second round applications to #RestoringYourRailway
So that's 110 between the 1st and 2nd rounds... Quite a popular scheme you've got there @chhcalling - hope there's a high conversion rate from application to reinstatement!

Changing consumer attitudes is tough without public health concerns...
Don't envy @transportgovuk's task to undo the damage of this "stay off public transport" messaging.
And in the context of the #RestoringYourRailway programme to support #ModalShiftToRail to achieve #NetZero.
As restrictions are eased today, we are still asking people to stay off public transport if they can but that is likely to result in more traffic on our roads. 🚙🚚🚗

THE JACOBITE RETURNS
We are delighted to announce that the Scottish Government advised that from Friday 17th July restrictions should be lifted on the leisure and tourism sector. We are therefore planning to take to the line yet again.
