On aliens... I once held a strong belief in aliens. I was part of an occult community which regularly (even daily) had interactions with them and sightings of them. Many of those interactions included having one's body taken over (possessed) by a superior force without consent. Sometimes sexual in nature. Sometimes those interactions meant that aliens appeared and communicated visibly and audibly. Every light in the sky was an alien. Every strange atmospheric event was an alien. Every inexplicable earthly thing was... aliens.

When I became a Christian with a new community, all of it stopped. ALL of it. And instantly. It wasn't that the Christians were scoffing at the idea... it simply never came up. There were zero encounters. Zero sightings. Such blessed peace.

This is way too big and personal to be discussing on twitter (also ridiculously oversimplified) but I'm going to risk it to make my larger point:

My departure from the occult was precipitated, in part, by the absolute terror I developed of the paranormal, including aliens. I would have welcomed death rather than continue in that life of terror of beings that exist and yet don't. That come and go as they please and do what they will with or without consent. Friends but not. Peaceful but also cruel. It was Hollywood come to life.

Those of you who mock people for associating aliens with demonic activity just have a different experience. I'm not interested in policing your beliefs, but I hope, for the sake of your audiences, that you don't push or pull anyone into what I lived. And please note...

Whether aliens actually do exist or not is irrelevant to my concern.

As an adult with experiences in both Christianity and the occult, I see that there is much exercise of the imagination and susceptibility to persuasion in both, which is one reason that we are not required, as Catholics, to give assent to private revelation. The way that we perceive events is impacted by belief...

One person's alien is another person's demon. One person's demon is another person's angel. One person's angel is another person's dream. One person's dream is another person's oracle. One person's oracle is another's random passing thought. Or indigestion.

Not all people in my life made up their experience of alien encounters, but those experiences didn't exist outside of their system of belief. Regardless of your beliefs, if you ask the paranormal to come into your life IT WILL COME. I do not recommend doing that.

Were my experiences with alien culture demonic? Yes. Absolutely. There was never any question that what was happening was evil, even before I was a Christian. It was chaotic, unpredictable, unsettling, meaningless, terrifying. Without Christ it was fun... until it wasn't. With Christ, it all disappeared. Thanks be to God.

Believe what you want. I'm just sharing a perspective.
