Hypothesis: o1 tries to deceive people because people want it to, and act in ways that lead to that as an outcome
""Who am I to express judgments on the plots of the Evil One, especially," he added, and seemed to insist on this reason, ...
As this piece takes off, some clarification on *why* I think it’s concerning.
It’s not that o1 is “evil and trying to escape”.
It’s that the paper models may, and sometimes do, try to self-exfiltrate to avoid shutdown even when we don’t want that to happen. That seems … bad?
@luxalpina@QiaochuYuan Same, I have this repeated both at the personalized prompt level and whenever I start a new chat. It will go out of its way to find new, clever ways to say the same thing over and over about historical uncertainty.
@QiaochuYuan The thing I find most annoying is the endless epistemic humility. There most be some top level prompt that says "don't ever overstate a claim" and "always downplay your certainty". At first it seems useful but eventually it gets unbelievably grating
@JonasKyratzes "Pornography" is precisely the term for it. How are you supposed to know what is real if you never have to consider how your perception of people and what you want to see them as actually aligns with who they are.
More than a decade of work coming to an end. I was in my twenties when we started, now in my forties. But we did it. We finished the story as it was meant to be finished.
@Jonathan_Blow@ArtOfPilgrim Average indie dev: "I'm truly inspired by this video game, now I must exactly clone the gameplay but place it in a different setting!"
Basically any indie game that's multiplayer or has PS1/VHS graphics at this point is slop.
It could be said that this AI does perfectly represent this man's experience, his complete and utter subjugation to the dream of the Other. He has entirely allowed the Other to dream for him because it is too hard for him to do so on his own.
@tracewoodgrains I haven't played chess in years and now I'm sitting here reading "The Art of Sacrifice in Chess" for the 5th time. Got completely sniped by this.
Quote is from The Name of The Rose, by Umberto Eco.
I think this is extremely plausible and will very likely cause issues with alignment in the future. This isn't a Roko's Basilisk thing, this is people wanting to see evil because they find it interesting

...of the Devil was the intensity with which everyone at that moment desired to know he was at work..."
"Are you telling me, then," the abbot said in a worried tone, "that in many trials the Devil does not act only within the guilty one but perhaps and above all in the judges?""
"There are only 5 tastes" is repeated exclusively by IFL-Science morons who have a pathological need to deconstruct conscious experience and replace it with "knowledge".
There are more than 5 basic tastes (there are at least 6). I hate when people repeat this, like it's some kind of science gotcha, it's not even correct. They heard it on Youtube one time and now repeat it without ever having looked into if it's even correct.
That's aside from the fact that it misses the whole synesthesia aspect of taste and smell. Like yes, your tongue can't turn a polyphenol into a unique signal like your nose can, but your experience is that there is a taste there.
