I started Ireland's most ambitious camera trap project in Wicklow as part of Snapshot Europe.
Since 2021, I partnered with @UCD_Wildlife + @ReWildWicklow deploying 150 cameras, collecting ~400,000 photos, and ~31 years worth of survey effort.
2024's highlights below! 🧵👇
A wintery morning today in SW part of Białowieża Forest. -10°C throughout the night froze all the waterbodies including rivers, yet still Pygmy Owls & Hazel Grouses were vocally active in the sunshine.
Still the most interesting was two Red Deer stags rutting! Exceptionally late!
Couple of my Hereford charts found their way onto Facebook, bringing out the dredging and gully brigade.
How anyone can look at images like these and believe they’re the result of not clearing ditches or dredging some silt out of the bottom of rivers evades me.

There's serious ecological discussions to be had by adults about deer management, it would be great if all stakeholders were mature enough to be at the table.
We will be discussing the worrying development of leaving culled wild deer to rot in our national parks on @highlandradio this morning. This practice creates bio security hazards and waste sustainable venison and is detested by those who manage our deer @Glenveagh_NP@NPWSIreland
@zanzare96 (Our voting system) is something I understand a chara.
I should have added the caveat of May be a need to vote tactically in some areas - mea cupla
Would hope people research themselves before doing before listening to an account with a wolf as a photo
This account will be posting more on BlueSky, and less here - this place is being overrun by losers and fools.
Don't forget to vote Friday, vote left, transfer left.
Catch you on the flipside.
EXTRAORDINARY
One of the most extreme events in 3 centuries of European climatic history.
Hundreds of stations with Tmins above summer averages, up to 7/8C above JULY averages
Unbelievable MINIMUMS up to 23C in Asturias ,Northern Spain.
Max >28C France,updates later
15°C in southern England tomorrow—just 4 weeks before Christmas. Most of England will be ~8°C above the seasonal norm. 🌍 The wild climate swings we’re seeing will only intensify as the planet continues to warm.
Like rivers overhead, the branches of this tree bring life where they wander.
Growing for centuries in our Ancient Wood reserve in Ballinakelly, the entire area was probably named after this wood. In the Irish language Ballinakelly is "Baile na coille", the townland of the woods
This site is dying a quick death and not posting much anymore but imploring Irish followers to critically assess politicians during the election and not vote for charlatans & loons
FG have been in power since 2011, they did a budget a few weeks ago - 11% is a dangling 🥕
Fine Gael has said it will permanently reduce the VAT rate for the food-based hospitality, entertainment and hairdressing sectors to 11%, if returned to government

@yellowlabrador I wouldn't be started to vote Ind Ire if I felt that way
If I was in that position, I would research, vote tactically, look at parties that are consistent over yrs in ecosocialist views & ultimately reflect on if I think politics/gov is only something that happens at elections
@yellowlabrador You certainly voted green I am sure.
If you happy to vote for a group that will be ineffective in gov or opp, anti-vaxx, anti-climate action and anti-immigration - vote for them but just know that vote will make things that are bad now worse.
Many parties have green policy
