Bishop Varden gave a nuanced take on populism and immigration in a speech to the Nordic Bishops' Conference this week. He rejects both the idea that a nation is an "ideal" and that it is purely ethnic in basis.

He suggests that in looking to balance national identity with welcoming the stranger, we follow the model set by the Rule of St. Benedict. The Rule says that all guests must be welcomed as though they were Christ Himself. But...

"A guest, however, will stay for a while, then leave, once he has been comforted and fortified. When it comes to those who wish to enter and remain, those who would become citizens of the monastic microcosm, St Benedict’s approach is different. He urges that postulants’ motives be tested. They are to be kept waiting for a while, then to be told all the ‘difficult and hard things’ community life entails. The Rule is to be read to them repeatedly, so that they can freely decide: ‘Will I, and can I, keep this covenant of coexistence?’"

This is the only time I have seen a bishop implicitly acknowledge that the welcoming of strangers enjoined in Scripture does not mean making them permanent residents and giving them unconditional citizenship. Very often, it refers to guests who are passing through.

Fr. Mike Schmitz just revealed that Fulton Sheen’s preaching helped lead his own grandfather into the Catholic Church.

His grandfather was Lutheran. He married a Catholic woman and would attend Mass with her, but for years he had no intention of converting.

Then he started listening to Fulton Sheen.

Eventually, he became convinced of the truth of the Catholic faith and entered the Church.

Fulton Sheen died in 1979. His preaching is STILL bearing fruit.

In three days, the Church will call him Blessed Fulton Sheen.

People need to stop misrepresenting Pope Leo. What he condemns are wars of aggression. He is not a pacifist. As he writes in Magnifica Humanitas, “armed force should be used only as a last resort in cases of legitimate self-defense… the Catechism of the Catholic Church speaks of the possibility of legitimate defense by means of military force” (paragraph 197, and note 182).
