Today, Jamaica honours the life and legacy of the Honourable James “Jimmy Cliff” Chambers, OM, whose work helped shape the global recognition of Jamaican music and culture.
Through his voice, songwriting, and creativity, Jimmy Cliff carried Jamaica’s story to international audiences.
Rising from humble beginnings, he contributed to the global awareness of reggae at a formative period and used his music to speak to perseverance, dignity, and hope. Songs such as Many Rivers to Cross, You Can Get It If You Really Want, Wonderful World, Beautiful People, and The Harder They Come reflected the experiences and aspirations of the Jamaican people.
His role in The Harder They Come marked a significant moment in Jamaica’s cultural history, introducing global audiences to reggae and to the social realities and creative expression of Jamaica.
Over more than six decades, Jimmy Cliff remained committed to his craft. His induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and the award of the Order of Merit acknowledged artistic achievement and national contribution. His music offered encouragement to those facing hardship and pride to a people whose culture he represented with authenticity.
On behalf of the Government and people of Jamaica, I extend condolences to his family, loved ones, and to the global community mourning his passing. His voice will continue to travel across borders and generations, affirming the power and reach of Jamaican culture.
