a lot of people in finance suffer from what I call the “one more bonus” syndrome

all year they yearn to quit their desk job and do something more interesting. the only rationale for staying is to wait for the next bonus check

bonus day comes around, they see the large number on a piece of paper. they splurge on something nice, which changes their mind for a week or so

then the next deal comes along and it goes back to the “i will quit, but just one more bonus”

know way too many people who have “one more bonus” themselves to VP and junior Director titles now

kind of depressing when you think about it. they are obviously well paid and get to buy most things they want

but, they don’t own the money they make. the salary and promise of a bonus check has leashed them to a desk job they don’t like very much

combined with sunk cost fallacy, they are constantly running the very treadmill they despise
