1/ Black Africans weren't at the edge of the Greek world. They're in its founding text.

"Ethiopian" is Greek — Aithiops, "burnt-face." In Homer, the gods leave Olympus to feast with them (Iliad 1.423). Memnon, an African king, is one of the Trojan War's great heroes.

2/ And not just gods and kings....Odysseus's own herald was black. In the Odyssey (19.246), Odysseus describes Eurybates as melanochroos — dark-skinned — and oulokarēnos — woolly-haired.

He says he honored this man above all his other companions, because their minds moved as one.

So Homer's ideal of loyalty. Described as a Black man. On purpose.

3/ Egypt runs all through the Odyssey — as a place of wealth and wisdom, never contempt. Menelaus builds his fortune there (Od. 4.125). Helen's grief-killing drug, nepenthe, is a gift from an Egyptian woman, Polydamna (Od. 4.220).

So when Homer's Greeks looked to Africa, they looked up - with respect.

4/ Homer even doubles the Ethiopians — "sundered in two, the farthest of men, some where the sun sets, some where it rises" (Od. 1.23).

A people at the world's edges, yes but firmly inside the Greek imagination. Feasting with gods. Fighting at Troy. Named, honored, remembered.

5/ This isn't a rewrite of the classics. It's what the classics say. Frank Snowden spent a career documenting it (Blacks in Antiquity): Africans were woven through the Greco-Roman world and the ancients carried none of our color prejudice.

Because that prejudice wasn't ancient. It was invented later to sell a racist lie by 16th century colonizing Europeans and slave holders.

6/ And this isn't only myth. During Homer's own era (~750–700 BC), Egypt - the civilization the Greeks revered as their teacher was ruled by the 25th Dynasty: the Kushite pharaohs.

Black kings from Nubia. Piye, Shabaka, Taharqa.

The Greeks' fountain of wisdom, in that very moment, wore African crowns.

7/ So when racists tell you the racial hierarchy is natural or timeless, remember what the oldest texts show:

The founding culture of the West feasted its gods in Ethiopia, sought its wisdom in Africa, honored a Black man as the ideal of loyalty, and never once ranked human beings by a color line.

That racist color line was drawn in the 1600s by European colinizers and slave holders to justify a slave economy.

That is exactly why its racist damage is systemic, not natural.

Racism was built into law and deed on purpose. And what's built on purpose can be dismantled on purpose by undrstanding the truth about the past especially the true Greek past.
