In my well advanced years? I can tell you exactly what "used to be" ........both decades past, and even as little as ten or fifteen years ago, when even the crap was better crap than today.
We were not quite so spoiled. We did not spend endless hours staring at Instagram and Tik Tok images of the newest, coolest you name it. Had that even existed in the sixties, to early nineties? We had more grown ups in the demographic, age regardless. I had parents who understood this. They died comfortably , not wealthy. They DIED with the same furniture in the living room as was present at their move in....are you ready? Forty four years earlier!
Kids didn't have 15 pair of sneakers , (and 60 pair of flip flops)_. They had one. They went in the washer. You had school shoes ( one pair of penny loafers) and you had "dress up shoes" . That's it! Along with one pair of winter boots, which went OVER your shoes, and yes,...your toes froze.
Getting a new outfit was a big deal, whether for school, or a holiday. You used something until it could no longer be repaired, or was outgrown to no fit.
Fast Forward......from a handful of discount places to:
TJMaxx, Marshalls, Home Sense, Kohls, Hobby Lobby, Dollar stores...along with the "so called " luxury garbage" of Restoration Hardware, West Elm, and many many more. All equaling a landfill destiny at some point as Totally GREAT stuff languishes in your local consignment store. But," it is too brown", too whatever, not of this very fleeting moment and mommy had something like that! Horrors!
Truth? Fleeting moments/new bells and whistles DO drive consumer lust and an economy. How many times do you want to replace a fridge? A couch? Do you really NEED a new phone every year, a tv the size of a multiplex cinema for less than 400 bucks?
But. You do have these things, these choices...........: ) You just don't have a whole lot of money, despite the prices of the bargain.
