Meanwhile, in Botswana, there is a heated debate between Botswana's government and the IMF over how much of the diamond sector Botswana should own.

Botswana is only one of 3 African countries who have never gone to borrow from the IMF since independence. They only interact with the IMF via Article IV. They're just a member, that's it. At most, they get advice.

Basically, Botswana has an arrangement with the diamond congolmerate De Beers called "Debswana". It's historically been a joint partnership. Botswana now wants 100%, basically. Kind of like Ghana's GoldBod in a way (it's a little different). The IMF claims that owning 100% would make Botswana overreliant on diamonds as an economy.

This raises an interesting question: can Botswana elevate diamond ownership without becoming too reliant on the sector?

The answer is YES. Frankly, what they need is better advice than what the IMF has to offer, if they're basically claiming it's impossible right now. 😂
