On this, our American Independence Day weekend, we need to pay attention to what is happening elsewhere around the world. The challenges we face globally are the exact same challenges we face domestically, the scale is a bit different but the outcomes will be much the same if we don’t wake the hell up!

In 1863, there were two critical Civil War engagements this same weekend, 160 years ago — the battle of Gettysburg and the siege of Vicksburg. One was led by a cautious general (Meade), the other by a bold commander (Grant). Both resulted in victories but one resulted in determining the future of that war and our country as Grant went on to defeat the South, and eventually become U.S. president.

Sometimes leaders emerge from the least likely of places—we need that now in our country.
