At first, he thought it was about a new project.
He even brought his notebook.
But when he entered, there were two people waiting.
His manager.
And someone from Human Resources.
The moment he saw HR, his face changed.
They thanked him for his years of service.
They said the company was “restructuring.”
They said his position was no longer needed.
Then they handed him an envelope.
His termination letter.
He sat there silently, reading the words over and over.
For years, he had given the company everything.
And for three months, he had trained the person who would replace him.
The “new assistant” was not there to support the department.
She was there to take over his role.
When he returned to his desk, the office went quiet.
Nobody knew what to say.
The new assistant was crying.
She had no idea either.
She thought she was being trained for a different position.
He packed his things slowly.
A family photo.
A coffee mug.
A notebook full of ideas he had never gotten the chance to present.
Then, before leaving, he walked over to the new assistant.
Everyone expected him to be angry.
But he wasn’t.
He smiled sadly and said,
“Don’t blame yourself. You didn’t do this.”
Then he picked up his bag and walked out.
Boss: “You arrived 10 minutes late.”
Employee: “Yesterday I stayed late finishing that last-minute report.”
Boss: “I understand… but rules are rules.”
The next day, the employee arrived exactly on time.
And at 6:00 p.m. sharp, shut down the computer.
No extra emails. No work taken home.
If punctuality is non-negotiable, then effort must have boundaries too.
Recognition cannot be one-sided.
When mistakes are highlighted but dedication is ignored, the real message becomes clear:
“Do only what’s required. Nothing more.”
Empathy costs nothing.
The absence of it? That can cost you everything—especially your best people
