On January 15, 1909, president-elect William Howard Taft ate an 18-pound possum at a banquet in Atlanta.

He'd asked for it himself. "Possum and taters," they called it, the whole roasted animal laid out on a bed of Georgia sweet potatoes, with persimmon beer to wash it down. Taft went at it so hard a doctor at the table told him to slow down.

He didn't. The next day he told reporters, "Well, I certainly like possum. I ate very heartily of it last night, and it did not disturb in the slightest my digestion or my sleep."

Then it got stranger. Teddy Roosevelt was leaving office, and toymakers feared the Teddy Bear would go with him. So Atlanta boosters handed Taft a stuffed possum that night and crowned it the next great American toy: "Billy Possum," successor to the bear.

It failed within a year. As it turns out, no child wants to hug a possum.

If y'all remember our last RV trip to Nashville was a bit of crazy adventure with our generator smoking about 2 hrs from home. The generator is required while traveling to room the rooftop ACs. It was 100 degrees on the road and plans had to be changed for ensure we were at RV parks as opposed to using our normal Harvest Host stops along the way (cause you have to boondock and run the generator).

We made it back home eventually with some engine problems on the last leg. Not only did my wonderful husband fix the engine issue. Over this weekend, he singlehandedly changed out the 800 lb generator. It required disassembling the front of the RV and lots of pulleys and levers but he did it. I'm amazed at his talents and ability to literally do anything he sets his mind to.

The 9/11 hero they tried to erase.On the morning of September 11, 2001, William Rodriguez was in the sub-basement of the North Tower doing his job as a janitor, a job he’d held for nearly 20 years.

At 8:46 a.m., Rodriguez felt a massive explosion erupt from below him in the mechanical room on B2 level. The blast threw people into the air, cracked walls, dropped ceilings, and activated sprinklers. Seconds later the plane slammed into the upper floors.A coworker, Felipe David, came running toward him with skin hanging from his arms and face, screaming “Explosion!”

Rodriguez didn’t run. Using his master key, he spent the next hour and a half unlocking doors, freeing people trapped in elevators filling with water, carrying the injured (including a man in a wheelchair) down swaying stairwells, and guiding firefighters through hidden pathways. He was one of the very last people to escape before the tower collapsed. He was hailed as a hero, invited to the White House, and praised by President Bush himself.

But when Rodriguez kept telling the truth, that the first explosion came from the basement, before the plane impact everything changed.

Mainstream media told him to “cut that part out.” His full testimony was omitted from the official 9/11 Commission Report. He became persona non grata. The man who risked everything to save lives that day was suddenly sidelined for refusing to stay silent about what he saw and heard.

His story matches accounts from hundreds of other first responders who reported explosions in the basements and elevators that day.

August 21 marks another anniversary of Kenneth Trentadue’s death in federal custody in Oklahoma City — four months after the 1995 bombing that killed 168 people.

Officially ruled a suicide by hanging, the death has never sat right with his family. Kenneth’s body showed extensive injuries that his brother Jesse has long argued were inconsistent with suicide. Oklahoma City’s chief medical examiner at the time also expressed serious doubts.

Jesse Trentadue, an attorney, has spent more than three decades seeking answers. He has developed evidence he believes connects his brother’s death to unanswered questions about the Oklahoma City investigation itself — including theories of a larger intelligence operation involving the FBI and the Southern Poverty Law Center.

In 1997, then-Deputy Attorney General Eric Holder led efforts to persuade the Senate Judiciary Committee not to hold hearings on Kenneth’s death. Those hearings never took place. Years later, when Holder was nominated as Attorney General, Jesse publicly criticized him for what he described as a determined effort to shut down the family’s push for a full investigation.

A later statement by Timothy McVeigh on death row — that Kenneth had been killed in a case of mistaken identity for the never-identified “John Doe 2,” who rode beside McVeigh in the bomb truck — further fueled Jesse’s determination. That led him into federal court and a long FOIA campaign beginning in 2004.

Through those FOIA lawsuits Jesse has challenged the official lone-wolf narrative of the bombing and sought release of surveillance videotape that reportedly show McVeigh with John Doe 2, delivering the bomb. That legal battle continues.

Three decades later, Jesse Trentadue has never stopped asking the central question: What exactly happened to Kenneth in that cell?
