A Small Boat. A Wild River. An Elephant Calf. And A Masterclass in Rivercraft

This was not simply a rescue.

A tiny elephant calf, swept kilometres down the swollen Teesta river,had to be brought aboard a narrow, low-freeboard fishing dinghy — a boat never designed to carry an animal of that size, let alone in a fast current.

Yet five fishermen did it.
They read the river, judged the current, controlled the boat and somehow kept it upright as the frightened calf was brought alongside and aboard. With the boat suddenly carrying an unpredictable, moving load, every shift of weight mattered.

This is where their exceptional skill becomes apparent. They weren’t merely rowing. They were constantly correcting — managing trim, balance, angle and momentum while using the river’s own movement to their advantage.

And then they had to get back.
Three men entered the water and helped push the boat against the current after the reported four-kilometre pursuit.

There was no specialised rescue craft. No sophisticated equipment. Just small boats, wooden oars and decades of accumulated knowledge of the Teesta.

The calf was eventually handed to the Forest Department and reunited with its mother. The rescue deserves celebration. But so does the extraordinary boatmanship behind it.

These fishermen deserve more than a headline and a photograph. They deserve formal recognition and a meaningful reward.

Today, on International Vulture Awareness Day, we must remember that every vulture in our skies performs an extraordinary ecological service, cleaning up carcasses, recycling nutrients and helping limit disease risks. Science has shown us that their disappearance can have catastrophic consequences. It has also shown us that recovery is possible.

This is a view of India 🇮🇳 you could hardly have imagined ten years ago !

I have been traveling extensively in India and its is amazing to see how infrastructure is improving by the day:

* Trains are much more reliable and comfortable. Next year first high speed line will open.
* Airports are modern and new airports are coming up by the day - in Mumbai, greater Delhi and more.
* 25 Indian cities are constructing metros.
* Roads are drastically improving - both highways and may be most importantly the last mile connection to the hundreds of thousands of villages.

There is an old saying that if you want to get rich you should start by building a road. The infrastructure revolution in India is a marvelous step towards Viksit Bharat - the modern India.

HAL Is Building A Critical Missing Link In India's Aero-Engine Ecosystem 🇮🇳

HAL has issued a global Expression of Interest to establish a 10,000-ton aerospace forging press at its Foundry & Forge Division in Bengaluru.

The facility will manufacture titanium and nickel-alloy forgings such as turbine discs, compressor discs, shafts and rings, high-value aerospace components that India still largely sources from overseas
.
The capability will support programmes including AMCA, TEDBF and future indigenous fighter engines, while also strengthening HAL's manufacturing partnerships with GE Aerospace and Safran.

The new facility will reduce dependence on imported aerospace forgings and strengthen India's ability to manufacture advanced aero engine components domestically. 🇮🇳
