My family left 9/9/99 - coincidentally the day of one of the Moscow apartments bombings that led to the 2nd Chechen war solidifying Putin in power. We had no idea we witnessed the last bit of light before it became darker and darker over 22 years 😢

The Russia I knew 30 years ago is gone. The flame of democracy that was lit with Perestroika died out a decade later. Today, Putin’s dictatorial regime is starting to resemble Stalin’s Russia of 1937 or Hitler’s Germany in 1939.

I went to Brookline High for 1 year as a new immigrant (before moving next door to Newton, also very good).

My parents paid high rent specifically to place me in good public school (before buying in a much cheaper town in MA when I went to college).
