Trita Parsi’s brother Rouzbeh Parsi lost his job as the head of the Middle East program at the Swedish Institute of International Affairs in 2025. This happened after investigations exposed his undisclosed ties to the Iran Experts Initiative, a network linked to Iran's foreign ministry.

For those who don’t know, The Iran Experts Initiative (IEI) was a project launched by Iran’s Foreign Ministry in 2014 to build and coordinate a network of overseas (mainly Western-based) academics, researchers, and analysts—often second-generation Iranians affiliated with think tanks and universities—to promote Tehran’s perspectives on international issues, especially its nuclear program.

How is Trita allowed to be in the US when his brother, who he is very close with, is tied to the Iran Experts Initiative?

Trita has been running around to the media telling people he is advising JD Vance @JDVance and the White House on Iran. He is on the record telling people as of one week ago that he is advising multiple “high level White House officials” on Iran.

@SecRubio it’s time to deport Trita Parsi once and for all so he and his brother can engage in their subversive Islamic behavior far away from the US and the White House.

🔴 My first instinct was also to speak out against that SAVAK action (I wrote two comments about it) and say that it was not helpful. Then I read through the timeline and let myself be pulled away from that position again. Now the Shah himself has spoken: actions like this only create controversies that harm the entire movement. His movement.

I also have to say honestly that the Shah has repeatedly said he is against aggressive language and insults. I try to express every criticism in a factual way because I want to listen to him.

But this part gets ignored by almost everyone. The comments are full of insults. I believe everyone is capable of expressing disagreement without insulting people. But some large accounts do nothing except leave insults under every tweet - some in English so everyone can read it and so it gives our enemies ammunition.

He says this so often - why don’t we listen to him? He is the one saying it, not me. I am only asking why we are not listening to him.

🔴About The Panel "Iran: The Next Chapter" At The Oslo Freedom Forum

The moderator is Gissou Nia, who worked for CHRI, an NGO founded by Hadi Ghaemi, who previously served on the board of NIAC. As for the panelists, I am mainly referring to statements by Zhino Babamiri (who does not consider herself a separatist, though I do) and Nazanin Afshin-Jam MacKay, who, in my view, has not had anything new to say since 2022.

First of all, the panel was not entirely bad. Many important and valid points were also made. This post is simply a critique of the parts of the discussion that I found problematic.

◼️Nia opens by saying that people in Iran took to the streets on January 8 and 9 because of a positive signal from Trump. That is, of course, false. They were responding to the call of Crown Prince @PahlaviReza. Nia did leave that part out.

◼️MacKay, in her introduction, lists the protests of 1979, 2009, 2019, and 2022. When she gets to 2026, she does acknowledge that it is a national revolution, but according to her, only “some” people refer to it as the Lion and Sun Revolution. She also completely leaves out the fact that millions of people followed the call of Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi and chanted his name.

◼️Babamiri is responsible for the ethnic fetishization of Iran on this panel. She complains that Kurdish people receive the least media representation in the West. Looking at Germany, however, much of the discussion about Iran in podcasts, newspaper articles, books, and even the direct channels to German politicians is concentrated around separatist Düzen Tekkal and her NGO Hawar Help, for which communists and separatists Daniela Sepehri, Mina Khani and Mariam Claren work.

This network receives a disproportionate share of the media attention devoted to Iran and consistently directs it toward issues such as separatism (Kurdistan) and its opposition to Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi and his supporters. Despite receiving millions of euros in taxpayer funding every year, they systematically exclude monarchist voices from Iran. Hawar Help itself shared Babamiri's remarks on Instagram.

◼️McKay is asked about the obstacles and identifies two categories: (1) geopolitical/external and (2) opposition/internal:

Under the first category, she mentions only measures that would never bring down the regime. This is the central criticism I have of these professional activists. Her examples include internet access, strike funds, and strengthening civil infrastructure inside Iran.

- Internet access alone does not overthrow a regime that can, and repeatedly does, shut the internet down whenever it chooses.
- Strike funds are difficult to implement due to sanctions and the practical impossibility of ensuring that the IRGC does not seize the money once it enters Iran.
- And "strengthening civil infrastructure" has been a longstanding talking point of NIAC-aligned circles. Hadi Ghaemi himself has acknowledged that many NGOs operated in Iran before 2009. After the Green Movement, however, they were shut down, their members arrested, imprisoned and executed. What effect does civil infrastructure ultimately have if it can be dismantled by the regime at any moment?

If these approaches had a realistic chance of overthrowing the regime, they would have done so at some point over the past 47 years. They are simply not enough.

- The regime has also created a controlled opposition inside the country, including within its prisons, in order to convince Western audiences that there is an internal opposition that merely needs more support. In reality, these figures operate only within boundaries set by the regime itself. They do not pose a meaningful threat to the continued existence of the Islamic Republic and would not endanger it even centuries from now.

This is where my doubts begin. A large part of this ecosystem does not seem interested in the regime's collapse. Instead, it appears invested in the regime's survival because it is part of an NGO ecosystem whose purpose, visibility, and funding depend on the continued suffering of people inside Iran. As long as that suffering continues, there will always be material for campaigns, advocacy work, fundraising, and media appearances in the West.

- At the end, she also mentions countering regime propaganda. I am quite certain, however, that McKay and I have very different definitions of what constitutes regime propaganda and, more importantly, who is responsible for spreading it.

◼️McKay's second point is directed at the opposition. She cites the GAMAAN study and claims that support for Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi is/was only around 30 percent. That figure is a drastic understatement of his actual support.

And, just as she did in 2022 and every year since, she once again calls for a "pluralistic opposition coalition" - some form of council or government composed of different opposition figures in exile. The problems with this idea are as follows:

1. Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi already formed such a coalition in July 2025 during the Convention of National Cooperation to Save Iran (whose livestream alone lasted eleven hours). The coalition consists of, or has since been joined by, people from different political backgrounds, ethnic groups, and religious minorities, ranging from monarchists and republicans to former MEK supporters and children of former MEK members, and so on.

What unites this coalition are the Crown Prince's four core principles (Iran's territorial integrity, individual freedoms and human rights, the separation of religion and state, and the right of the Iranian people to determine their future through free elections). Anyone who chooses not to join is, by definition, rejecting one or more of those principles.

2. McKay speaks of opposition leaders in the plural. Yet hundreds of videos from the January protests showed that millions of people in Iran were chanting only one name: Pahlavi. No one else's. So on what basis do others claim the right to sit at the same table as equals to the Crown Prince when no one else is being called upon by the Iranian people? Legitimacy comes from the people of Iran alone. And they have given their voice to one person and one person only.

3. These suggestions are little more than a regime-sponsored exercise in wasting time. Listening to McKay's description, it becomes clear that her ideal pluralistic project - despite lacking any democratic legitimacy - is, above all, a process designed to buy time. First, a neutral international mediation team would have to be selected. By whom? Then that team would have to assemble a group of figures alongside Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi. Who will elect those figures? By the time this process is completed, years will already have passed.

This group would then meet in exile and begin negotiating the Crown Prince's four core principles. Separatist groups do not accept Iran's territorial integrity, while the MEK does not accept human rights or free democratic elections. So what exactly is the purpose of this entire project? The result is that the regime gains years to stabilize itself. That is the only practical outcome of these side projects, including initiatives such as the Iran Freedom Congress, which attempt to present themselves as alternatives to the Crown Prince's political movement.

So, to summarize: the Crown Prince has the legitimacy granted to him by the people of Iran. He has a diverse and broad-based coalition, and he has a detailed plan for the day after the regime's fall through the Iran Prosperity Project. McKay's proposal would do nothing but buy time for the regime rather than help the people of Iran.

Everything she says should happen has already happened. The red lines have been clearly defined, and the plan for the day after the regime's fall has already been developed and presented. Yet she has been ignoring this reality for years and continues to repeat, like a broken record, the demand that all of these things still need to be created, developed, and agreed upon - even though they already exist.

◼️Then the "non-separatist" argues that Iran has lived under dictatorship for the past hundred years - first under the Pahlavis and then under the Islamic Republic.

I am tired of hearing this narrative: In various parts of Iran, Soviet-armed communist groups formed and repeatedly attempted to separate territory from Iran through violence and bloodshed. The Pahlavis did what any sovereign state would do when confronted with armed movements seeking to break apart the country: they did not allow those separatist projects to succeed.

Ever since, these separatist movements have relied on a victimhood narrative, claiming that they were oppressed and discriminated against under the Pahlavis. The comparison between the Pahlavi dynasty and the Islamic Republic could hardly be more false. She also repeats the claim that there is not a single opposition leader. Yet there is one figure whom millions of Iranians have openly rallied behind: Crown Prince Reza Pahlavi. Ignoring that reality does not make it disappear.

◼️In her next contribution, the separatist/non-separatist once again states that she opposes U.S. and Israeli strikes against schools.

She was also directly asked whether she is a separatist. She gives an answer that everyone should listen to for themselves and judge on their own (around minute 14) whether she is or is not. I have reached my own conclusion: her answer is exactly what I would expect a separatist to say.

◼️McKay closes by once again advocating for her vision of a "pluralistic government" in exile.

No government in the Western world simultaneously represents every ethnic group, every religious minority, and every political faction across the entire spectrum. Every democratic government is ultimately centered around a leadership chosen by a majority at a given moment, together with a selective group of representatives and political actors. Yet the Iranian opposition is expected to meet a standard for a transitional government in exile that no functioning Western democracy is required to meet. Why?

Because this is not about realistic political requirements. It is about time. Time that is gained for the regime while activists continue to build careers, raise funds, and sustain an NGO-based Iran activism ecosystem in the West. These endless demands for ever-broader coalitions and ever-more-inclusive structures serve primarily to delay action rather than advance meaningful change. During that time, the regime remains in power, and the people inside Iran continue to pay the price.
