$IREN: A Familiar Playbook

Today, I see many parallels to $IREN's Bitcoin mining era, which may give investors a hint of what to expect going forward.

Just like today with the company’s emerging cloud platform, most investors didn’t take $IREN seriously as an emerging contender in the mining space.

While competitors like $CLSK and $MARA steadily grew their hashrate (mining output), in part by colocating with third-party operators, $IREN spent its time building the foundations at Childress, similar to what they’ve done with Sweetwater over the past 18 months.

Once the groundwork was completed and the first few data center shells were standing, they aggressively ramped construction and, with it, their mining hashrate. In a span of just 8 months in 2024, $IREN went from a fringe miner that most investors in the space weren’t familiar with to becoming a top-3 producer.

It took only a little over a year for $IREN to become the #1 miner by monthly production output, making it one of the fastest ascents in the industry’s history.

On top of that, they managed to do so while being the only miner to achieve multiple quarters of GAAP operating profitability (excluding FASB fluctuations / BTC balance sheet adjustments) during one of the industry’s worst market environments.

Today, a similar pattern is emerging.

While cloud competitors are steadily scaling, $IREN is building the foundations of its platform. In practical terms, that means retrofitting its mining data centers for cloud use while simultaneously developing new greenfield builds across multiple sites.

I’m getting an oddly familiar deja vu feeling, knowing that $IREN's revenues are about to experience a hockey stick-like ascent, just as they did 2 years ago. And with it should come superior margins, enabled by operating a fully vertically integrated platform.

The time of $IREN being counted out by the market is soon coming to an end.

When my husband died, because he was so famous and known for not being a believer, many people would come up to me ― it still sometimes happens ― and ask me if Carl changed at the end and converted to a belief in an afterlife.

They also frequently ask me if I think I will see him again. Carl faced his death with unflagging courage and never sought refuge in illusions. The tragedy was that we knew we would never see each other again. I don't ever expect to be reunited with Carl.

But, the great thing is that when we were together, for nearly twenty years, we lived with a vivid appreciation of how brief and precious life is. We never trivialized the meaning of death by pretending it was anything other than a final parting.

Every single moment that we were alive and we were together was miraculous-not miraculous in the sense of inexplicable or supernatural. We knew we were beneficiaries of chance.

That pure chance could be so generous and so kind. That we could find each other, as Carl wrote so beautifully in Cosmos, you know, in the vastness of space and the immensity of time. That we could be together for twenty years. That is something which sustains me and it’s much more meaningful.

The way he treated me and the way I treated him, the way we took care of each other and our family, while he lived. That is so much more important than the idea I will see him someday. I don't think I'll ever see Carl again. But I saw him. We saw each other. We found each other in the cosmos, and that was wonderful.
