The Sexual Exploitation of Children. A Personal Encounter With Darkness We do not want to look at this most vicious and brutal of crimes perpetrated against our children worldwide. However, we must do so in order to end it. The pain we feel when confronted with the sad realities is not even a fraction of the pain and horror the raped, tortured and traumatised children have to go through every single day. When I worked as a doctor in a hospital in South Africa, I was confronted with the utter darkness of the crime and forced to see things that cannot be unseen. I encourage us all to start taking real actions to end this crime once and for all.

Here is some background information: According to the International Labour Organization, there are 1.7 million children trafficked for systematic sexual exploitation at any given moment worldwide. Further, in 2019, nearly 70 million child sexual abuse files (videos/pictures) were reported to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children that works with law enforcement agencies. About 78% of child abuse files analysed by the Canadian Centre for Child Protection involved children under the age of 12; 63% showed children under 8. At any given time, there are 750,000 to over 1 million predators online searching for these files. Over half of these predators eventually go on to violate children physically offline, often those closest to them or those from vulnerable environments. As a society, we must take a clear stance against the exploitation and sexualisation of children now.
