What a lot of people still don't understand is that, since 2007, Israel has strictly controlled everything & everyone that goes in and out of Gaza. Israel controls Gaza's land borders, territorial waters, airspace, imports, and exports. This is why Gaza is considered to be under Israeli military occupation since 1967, even though Zionists will tell you that the occupation ended when they dismantled their (illegal) Gaza settlements.

If I tried to sail to Gaza's coast, without even passing into Israeli territorial waters, my ship would be raided and seized by the IDF. This has happened to every single boat that has tried to sail to Gaza since 2010.

This blockade has shaped nearly every facet of life in Gaza since 2007, prohibiting Palestinian people from importing basic items that most of us take for granted every day. Furthermore, this blockade prohibits Palestinians themselves from leaving the Gaza Strip without explicit permission from the IDF, which only happens under extremely rare circumstances. For the average Palestinian, leaving the cage that Israel has built around them is practically impossible. The Egyptian government, being a puppet of the United States and Israel, has played along with Israel in enforcing the blockade.

For various periods of time since 2007, Israel has used this occupation to arbitrarily block and restrict the following (non-exhaustive) list of items from entering the Gaza Strip, often labeling them as 'dual use':
- wood
- wheelchairs
- water purification and filtration systems
- anesthetics
- generators & fuel
- paper
- children's toys
- crutches
- potato chips
- communications infrastructure & equipment
- concrete
- oxygen cylinders
- chocolate
- fishing nets

I know it sounds like I'm exaggerating or omitting key details. But if you don't believe me, look it up for yourself. I had the same reaction when I first learned about the blockade in 2024.

This blockade is so crippling to daily life in the Gaza Strip that, by the end of the third quarter of 2022, Gaza had an unemployment rate of 46%, the highest of anywhere in the world. Among 15-29 year olds, the unemployment rate was even higher, at 62%.

Israel expects Palestinian people in Gaza to be okay with a life of languishing and death while confined to a strip of land one-fifth the size of Rhode Island, never being allowed to prosper, flourish, or accomplish their dreams. This is how life in Gaza has been for nearly 20 years.

How is any human supposed to live like this without going insane? What could possibly be the purpose of restricting anesthetics, besides inflicting as much pain and suffering as possible?
