“The world is full of great criminals with enormous power, and they are in a death struggle with each other. It is a huge gang battle, using well-meaning lawyers and policemen and clergymen as their front, controlling papers, [and] means of communication, ...” Thomas Merton, 1962
@FrakkingMoron @9mmsmg @aaronschoice Just like to point out that the movie (neither original or extended) has the scene from the book he’s referencing, specifically when Aragorn reveals himself to Sauron via the palantír
@BrianRoemmele Also, ironically, glass was seen as littering danger. Glass bottles were being banned at beaches and parks because broken glass was a hazard. Now plastic waste is choking beaches and being deposited in the geologic strata as it leaches chemicals into the water and air and us.
@BrianRoemmele Increases gas prices were a win/win for petrochemical companies. Plastic containers weigh less than glass so so as fuel/transportation costs went up the switch was justified as cost reduction.

@asymmetricinfo I believe Time magazine or something polled my grandmother’s generation about technological advancements. This generation, born before flight, who lived to see men walk on the Moon and the atom unleashed, voted that the best invention of the modern world was the washing machine.
NEW via @ZarinaZabrisky: "From Assassination to Misinformation: Kremlin’s Strategic Use of Digital Disinformation"
Zarina's piece analyzes the spread of disinfo following yesterday's reported assassination attempt on Trump.
It highlights two main narratives: blaming Democrats and implicating Ukraine.
Her article traces these tactics to historical KGB operations and outlines how Russian state media and officials propagate such narratives. Key methods include repetition, rapid-fire techniques, and amplification through various media channels.
Zarina argues that these efforts are part of a broader Russian strategy to sow discord in U.S. democracy and potentially influence elections. She emphasizes the importance of recognizing these propaganda tactics to protect democratic processes from foreign interference.

The 2024 NH summer was the first with a global temperature anomaly above 1.5°C in one or more data sets!
These 1.5°C milestones should be front page news, as they will only be crossed for the first time once.
But only few understand the significance.
2023 a huge find of rare earth metals was made in Kiruna, north Sweden.
Yesterday an armed man broke into one of its drilling rigs. A few days earlier the same site was sabotaged.
The find equals 4 times the global yearly production of strategically important rare earth metals
