Bovril was originally called ‘Johnston’s Fluid Beef’. It was renamed by combining the Latin root ‘bov-’ (cow) and the word ‘vril’ — the name of a mysterious energy giving strength and power to a superior race of people from a 1870 sci-fi novel.
