I think matt's right that there was huge confusion in the market place:

For example, I thought @WordPress dot org was a part of the open source project, not someone's personal website. I was shocked to learn that wasn't the case

@briancoords @mikemcalister If only the WordPress Foundation was a real thing with real board members and some semblance of community say. It could raise money to support .org infrastructure for the community instead of it being one guy's website.
