This weekend, 4 cadets participated in mountain biking with our friends from @111SquadronATC. Not only did they practice their skills on the training loop, cadets took to the trails and enjoyed lots of air time...
Doors will open in September for anyone wishing to get involved!
Cadets from Southmoor Academy have finished the year on a high, enjoying a RAFAC camp at Inskip and mountain biking at Hamsterley Forest.
3 cadets attended CRC Inskip & participated in leadership, white water rafting, archery, sport and a trip to Blackpool Pleasure Beach!
Our latest CCF recruits have just been issued with their new equipment, ready for an exciting cadet career!
As Southmoor has a Royal Air Force Section, cadets receive the RAF blue uniform ready to visit stations, experience flying and access exciting camps around the country!
Southmoor Academy CCF cadets are flying high with their very own, state of the art, Flight Simulator.
The simulator accurately recreates flying conditions, weather and local scenery.
It is an immersive way to learn more about principles of flight and how an aircraft works!
Three Southmoor Academy CCF cadets have just completed their first flight in the Viking glider at RAF Topcliffe in North Yorkshire.
The Viking, which is launched into the air using only a winch, is but one of the many RAF aircraft that cadets can fly in.
An incredible day!
This week, some of our newest CCF members were able to practice and refine their leadership skills.
Using MTA, they learnt how to structure and deliver a briefing using SMEAC.
As they continue to hone their skills, they'll soon be eligible for the RAFAC leadership award!
Last week we held our special Remembrance assemblies throughout the week. Students have also been writing messages of Remembrance on poppy posts which have been planted in our Field of Remembrance. Today we joined together for Armistice Day and the 2 minutes silence at 11am.
Thank you to our RAF section cadets who paraded alongside the ATC for Remembrance Sunday!
They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old:
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
WE WILL REMEMBER THEM
This week, the CCF had the opportunity to take control of an aircraft without even leaving Southmoor!
Using flight simulator tech, cadets were able to fly a circuit of RAF Leeming and learn about the control surfaces of the Grob Tutor aircraft….
CCF lunchtime sessions -
Taking advantage of some sunshine, the cadets were able to practice their skills with Flt Lt Yeo, who is an Archery GB Instructor.
Cadets headed back to their afternoon lessons with a real sense of excitement and achievement!
This week, cadets from the CCF have completed their 'Applications of Space Technology' award.
Using immersive technology, the cadets were even able to take a walk on the International Space Station and see their home planet from orbit...
Well done to everyone who participated!
We were absolutely delighted to be invited to the Sunderland Battle of Britain parade at Mowbray Park today.
This important annual service remembers ‘the few’.
Well done to all involved - WE WILL REMEMBER THEM.
2/2 Imperial War Museum Duxford is a branch of the Imperial War Museum near Duxford in Cambridgeshire, England.
Britain's largest aviation museum, Duxford houses the museum's large exhibits, including nearly 200 aircraft, military vehicles, artillery and minor naval vessels!
1/2 An action packed week for us with cadets flying, many for the first time, and a visit to IWM Duxford with community ATC Squadrons.
Flying at RAF Leeming is always a sought-after experience and all six cadets achieved their blue RAFAC wings.
First Aid is such an important skill and we’re running the St John Ambulance Essential First Aid course over the next few weeks for our new intake!
This is a great course with cadets able to practice the recovery position, CPR and learn more about the role of a first aider.
We kick off 2024 with an action packed Training Programme - starting with parade night climbing sessions!
Alongside our friends @1338SqnATC and @SMA_CCF, these climbs are a great way to learn something new and make new friends.
Check Cadet Portal for more shared 2024 adventure!
Over the next few weeks we’ll be welcoming new recruits to the Section - with an amazing 20 prospective cadets looking to join us!
We have a varied Training Programme of first aid, leadership and communications planned.
Welcome to the wider RAFAC!
Just before the break, cadets were given the opportunity to join @111squadronatc on a Christmas walk on Hadrian’s Wall – making great memories & enjoying a doughnut or 2!
This picturesque area not only made for some excellent photographs but was a great intro to map reading…
Recently, a trip to RAF Topcliffe in North Yorkshire saw our cadets getting to grips with the controls of a Vigilant glider using a state of the art flight simulator.
On their next visit, they’ll actually take to the skies for their first gliding experience!
A wonderful end to the 2023 Adventure Training offer with a festive walk on Hadrian's Wall!
Cadets from the Squadron and @SMA_CCF enjoyed a winter walk in a special part of the world, making great memories and enjoying a doughnut or two..
Look out for AT on our 2024 programme!
