Just weeks after launching our campaign addressing the needs of our displaced communities in Lebanon , we are witnessing yet another wave of displacement provoked by Israel’s renewed threat to the residents of Beirut’s southern suburbs.

Families are once again leaving their homes, searching for safety, shelter, and reliable information. In moments like these, staying connected can be the difference between receiving an evacuation alert or missing it, finding aid or being left without support, reaching loved ones in danger, or losing contact with them altogether.

The challenges we brought to your attention the last months have not disappeared. If anything, they have become even more urgent now.

SMEX continues to support communities with digital safety resources, guidance on misinformation and threatening communications, and access to critical information during times of crisis. But we need your support to sustain and expand this work.

بعد مرور أسابيع على انطلاق حملتنا الرامية إلى دعم المجتمعات النازحة في لبنان، من خلال مساعدتهم على الوصول إلى الخدمات الرقميّة والبقاء متّصلين في جميع الأوقات، تشهد البلاد اليوم موجةً جديدة من النزوح نتيجة التهديدات الإسرائيلية المتجدّدة للعاصمة بيروت.

أُجبر الناس على ترك منازلهم من جديد بحثاً عن ملاذاتٍ آمنة. وتكاد تكون إمكانية نيل المساعدة، ومتابعة الإنذارات بالقصف، والتواصل مع الأحبة المعرّضين للخطر، والوصول إلى الأخبار، شبه مستحيلة في ظلّ غياب توفّر الإنترنت والاتصالات.

تعاونت "سمكس" مع ملكة جمال لبنان لعام 2026 بيرلا حرب لنشر الوعي والمعرفة عن قضيّة كثيراً ما يتم تجاهلها، وهي العنف القائم على النوع الاجتماعي الذي يستهدف النساء.

In the face of growing internet threats, women are among the most vulnerable online. In fact, 70% of the cases handled by our Digital Safety Helpdesk came from women.

For the first time, commercial data centers were struck during an armed conflict.

Earlier this year, drones hit Amazon Web Services facilities in the UAE and Bahrain, taking down banking apps, payment platforms, and other digital services. The disruption was a warning: as the region races toward digitization, the civilian cost of targeting data centers will only grow.

Data centers must not be considered lawful military targets., they are civilian infrastructure, as critical as the electric grid or water supply.

We call on governments to enforce a clear separation between military and civilian uses of data centers, on operators to be transparent about what they host, and on tech companies to be held accountable for the military contracts they take on.

RightsCon2026 was de facto canceled after China pressured Zambia to exclude Taiwanese participants. Access Now took a principled decision and refused to hold a conference on those terms.

What are ad trackers and how do they work?

If you’ve ever wondered how platforms seem to know exactly where you came from, like prompting you to follow an account after watching a shared video, it’s probably due to ad trackers.

When you forward a tracked link, you’re also forwarding metadata about how you got it, like: a newsletter link you shared, which might reveal the campaign you received, or a shopping link might include referral codes.

It’s important you clean them out before sharing to preserve your privacy and those of your loved ones.

لكن الطريق تعثر بسبب جدل قانوني ومالي حاد حول استعانة “الهيئة المنظمة للاتصالات” بمستشار دولي لإعداد عقود الإدارة بدلاً من إنجاز المهمة بنفسها كما ينص القانون، وسط تحذيرات من هيئة الشراء العام وسابقين من غموض الأسس القانونية ومصدر التمويل واحتمال تكرار أخطاء حوكمة سابقة، في نقاش يمسّ كفاءة الدولة وشفافية المال العام في قطاع حيوي.

بعد دعوى قدّمتها منظمات «سمكس» و«المفكرة القانونية» و«مبادرة غربال»، أصدرت قاضية الأمور المستعجلة في بيروت قراراً بالرجوع عن حجب موقع «ش.م.ل»، الذي يوفّر بيانات السجل التجاري، ويتيح تتبّع ارتباطات الشركات بمحاميها، في خطوة تُكرّس علنية المعلومات التجارية وتعزّز حق الجمهور في الوصول إلى البيانات.
