Good to see the wisdom of JRR Tolkien making it into the new encyclical.
No one should be surprised.
Tolkien explicitly described The Lord of the Rings as "a fundamentally religious and Catholic work; unconsciously so at first, but consciously in the revision".
Tolkien’s beliefs are woven into a brilliant story which reminds humanity of its ethical and moral limits; which creates, in worldly terms, ill equipped characters who must battle against seemingly impossible odds; and which emboldens weak, meek and ordinary citizens to create their own circle/alliance of friends to protect human dignity and life itself.
Although Gandalf’s name derives from the Norse it has a happy similarity to Castel Gandolfo, the summer residence of Popes - and who, like Gandalf, are clothed in white when a new chapter opens in their lives - and pitted against those who wish to control or dominate the entire world.
