India’s obsession with “sitting late = hard work” is the biggest scam in our work culture.

Here’s the truth nobody wants to admit:

Most people aren’t working late.
They’re just sitting late.

Waiting for the boss to leave.

Stretching 2 hours of work into 8.

Pretending busyness so they look “committed”.

And the worst part?

If you finish your tasks on time and log off at 6 PM, you’re “not serious”.

But if you sit till 9 PM scrolling, chatting, and being visible, you’re a “hard worker”.

This is why India is burning out.

Not because work is hard,
but because outcomes don’t matter, optics do.

We’ve normalized guilt for:

• Going home on time
• Having a life outside work
• Spending time with family
• Pursuing hobbies
• Resting

Hard work is finishing efficiently, not sitting pointlessly.

Until we fix this mindset, our workplaces will reward timepass and punish productivity.
