MISSING, NOT FORGOTTEN - 8th October 2026 - Day 331
When someone disappears, their family disappears into uncertainty with them.
They cannot plan normally. They cannot grieve normally. They cannot reassure children or elderly relatives. They cannot know whether to hope for a return or fear the worst.
International human rights law recognises the suffering caused to families by enforced disappearance.
331 days.

PASHTUN TAHAFUZ MOVEMENT (PTM)
Open Letter to the Secretary-General of the United Nations
His Excellency Mr. António Guterres
Secretary-General of the United Nations
United Nations Headquarters
New York, NY 10017
7 October 2026
Re: Your Visit to Pakistan and the Crisis in the Pashtun Homeland
Dear Secretary-General Guterres,
We write to you on behalf of the Pashtun Tahafuz Movement (PTM) while you are on your visit to Pakistan. Across the Pashtun homeland, people are living through a grave and worsening crisis of military violence, enforced disappearances and political repression. We believe it is vital that you raise these concerns both privately with Pakistan's leaders and publicly before you leave, and that doing so can help bring an end to the worst abuses.
For decades, the Pakistani military has waged an organised war against the Pashtun people under the cover of “counterterrorism” and “security”. Today, across large parts of the Pashtun homeland, people face drone and quadcopter attacks, mortar shelling and phosphorus attacks. Enforced disappearances, extrajudicial killings, collective punishment, the razing of villages, forced displacement and the militarised encirclement of entire districts have become recurring conditions of Pashtun life. In the latest round of operations, bombing and blockades are again killing civilians, mainly women and children, paralysing everyday life and forcing families to abandon their ancestral villages simply to survive. Families still search for sons and daughters taken away without a trace, and mothers still stand outside prisons, police stations and garrison gates demanding to know whether their children are alive or dead.
PTM did not invent this suffering; it gave it a voice. Since Manzoor Pashteen and thousands of ordinary Pashtuns first stood up in 2018, the state's answer has been surveillance, arrests, imprisonment and violence. It has criminalised peaceful resistance and banned PTM itself. Ali Wazir and Samad Khan remain imprisoned, while Haneef Pashteen, Noorullah Tareen and Fareed Afridi remain missing. Yet the movement continues, because the conditions that produced it continue.
Islamabad presents this war to the world, and to the United Nations, in the language of “stability”, “security” and “counterterrorism”. That vocabulary dresses the military seizure of Pashtun territory, land, resources and life in respectable terms. We see in it the continuation, under a Pakistani flag, of the same colonial logic and system that once ruled our mountains and cities from Whitehall.
The credibility of the United Nations depends on its willingness to speak plainly about abuses committed by its own Member States. Much of what is happening in the Pashtun homeland will not be shown to you in official meetings, and a visit that passes over these abuses in silence will be read in Islamabad as approval. Silence, when a people are made to live under permanent, organised state violence, becomes part of that violence.
We therefore urge that during your visit you:
•Privately and publicly call on Pakistan's civilian and military leadership to halt the bombing, drone and quadcopter strikes, shelling and blockades in Pashtun areas, and to end enforced disappearances and extrajudicial killings.
•Publicly call for the release of political prisoners, including Ali Wazir and Samad Khan, and for disclosure of the whereabouts of all forcibly disappeared persons, including Haneef Pashteen, Noorullah Tareen and Fareed Afridi.
•Meet the families of the disappeared, survivors of military operations, and representatives of PTM and Pashtun civil society, not only government officials.
•Urge Pakistan to grant unhindered access to UN human rights experts, including the Working Group on Enforced or Involuntary Disappearances and the Special Rapporteur on extrajudicial, summary or arbitrary executions, and seek assurances that no one who engages with you or with UN mechanisms will face reprisals.
Dear Mr. Guterres @antonioguterres, while you have been championing the rights of the oppressed during your tenure, you could not be more wrong about Pakistan.
Pakistan calls for the rights of Muslim minorities elsewhere just to appease certain fundamental elements within Pakistan. This is a part of a complex systematic strategy that diverts the attention of both the international community and fundamentalists in Pakistan from the atrocities committed against the oppressed minorities within Pakistan.
The atrocities committed against the Pashtun and Baloch minorities are not less than those committed against the Palestinians, the Rohingya, or any other oppressed group.
We would respectfully ask you to educate yourself in the systematic human rights abuses in Pakistan and raise the issues of enforced disappearances, arbitrary arrests, extrajudicial killings, and other forms of intimidation with the Pakistani authorities.

António Guterres should hear from those directly affected by conflict and insecurity in Pakhtunkhwa. Their experiences and concerns deserve a place in international discussions.
