General Anderson’s recent interview was more than a military assessment, it was a strategic warning. After nearly two decades of international military engagement, Somalia’s greatest challenge is no longer primarily military. It is political.
My latest essay argues that military force preserved the Somali state. Political legitimacy must now complete it. Read the essay and join the conversation

We extend our warmest congratulations to the Government and people of the United States on 250 years of independence.
Somalia values our partnership with the U.S., built on decades of cooperation in security, development, and people-to-people ties. Happy 250th, America. 🎆🇺🇸
In a display of regional solidarity and support, I presided over a reception ceremony to welcome Somali football referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan, whose historic World Cup opportunity was abruptly halted last month.
The event, held at Eastleigh's prestigious BBS Mall—renowned as the largest shopping complex in East and Central Africa—celebrated Artan's groundbreaking achievement of being selected as the first-ever Somali referee to officiate at a FIFA World Cup tournament. His selection placed him among an elite group of 52 match officials chosen for the 2026 competition, marking a significant milestone for Somali sports on the global stage.
Despite this professional setback, Artan received a warm reception from both the Somali diaspora community and Kenyan supporters.
The event served as both a celebration of his achievements and a statement of cross-border support in the face of disappointment.
I emphasized resilience and perseverance, encouraging young people across East Africa not to be discouraged by obstacles in their pursuit of dreams. It is important to continuing to striving for excellence despite unexpected challenges.
I also outlined deliberate moves by the 5th administration led by HE president William Ruto in supporting sports and talent.
President William Ruto’s administration allocated KSh 26.4 billion to complete 39 stadiums nationwide to support youth talent this including The newly constructed and soon to be commissioned state of the art 60,000 capacity Talanta Stadium
This geared towards uplifting talent and successfully hosting the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). This historic continental tournament will be jointly hosted by Kenya, Uganda, and Tanzania under the 'Pamoja Bid'.
Also in attendance was H.E Ahmed Abdullahi (Governor Wajir) H.E Jabril Abdulle (Somalia Ambassador to Kenya) H.E Hussein Mohammed (President FKF) Hon. Farrah Maalim (MP Dadaab) Hon. Yussuf Hassan (MP Kamukunji) and host Abdiweli Maalim (Chairman BBS Mall)

"On behalf of the United States of America, I congratulate the people and Government of the Federal Republic of Somalia on your 66th National Day.
The United States stands with the Somali people in their fight against terrorism, corruption, and in their efforts to build a more prosperous future. On this anniversary, I look forward to the year ahead and to working together to advance peace."

Omar Artan didn’t just make the #FIFAWorldCup, he made history as the first Somali referee to get there, and as #Africa’s best. That milestone stands no matter what. So sorry to see this, Omar. You reached the summit of your profession and inspired a generation back home just by getting there, and being kept off the pitch you earned doesn’t change that. This won’t be the end of your story on the world stage. The world stands with you as one family, wishing you resilience now and many more major finals to come. Solidarity. #Somalia
The violence unfolding in Mogadishu is reckless. Somali leaders on all sides have a responsibility to preserve stability and resolve differences through peaceful means.
Actions taken in the coming hours and days may have lasting consequences for Somalia’s security, unity, and future.
During my meeting with H.E. President @HassanSMohamud I also informed him on:
> the 🇪🇺 75 M€ allocation to AUSSOM and the need for burden-sharing going forward
> the implementation of the 63 M€ humanitarian aid by @eu_echo , including for those affected by the severe drought
I was briefed by @HassanSMohamud on his perspective on recent talks. Having spoken to @HESaidADeni yesterday, I gather that both sides remain open to dialogue. Somalis will decide on their political settlement. As a key partner, the EU hopes for an inclusive and democratic one.
Following the talks held from 13-15 May, @UNTMIS_ commends the parties for their resumption of dialogue and appreciates the efforts of the international partners who supported these discussions.
It is regrettable, however, that once again the dialogue concluded without resolving key disputes.
The UN Mission notes the parties’ stated commitment to continuing dialogue and to identifying a constructive way forward.
As Somalia enters a period of transition @UNTMIS_ hopes that, during this phase, the Federal Government of Somalia will prioritize engaging all stakeholders to build consensus around an electoral model that is practical and unifying.
The UN Mission further urges Somalis to come together to address the country’s severe humanitarian crisis and the persistent threat posed by terrorism.
@UNTMIS_ calls for restraint and reiterates its readiness to work with other international partners in support of efforts to overcome divisions among Somalia’s political leaders.
On this YouthDay, 🇸🇴 is entering a new political phase. Talks aim to agree the way fwd on elections: a realistic model, inclusive at its ❤️, where 🧕and youth voices can be heard.
I look forward to a joint statement later today, with a clear timeline for a peaceful transition.
The Turkish government @TC_MogadisuBE is positioning its influence beyond just @HassanSMohamud.
They likely understand that his chances of remaining in power legally non existent.
His sudden surge in confidence last night and increasingly aggressive rhetoric around extending his mandate did not happen in isolation.
Followed by a visit from the Turkish Amb. Today!
It raises serious questions about who is backing this escalation politically and strategically.
Türkiye most likely.
The collapse or derailment of the Xalane talks may not have been accidental. The failure of those negotiations, Turkey positions itself as the external actor that “rescues” the process by mediating and delivering a political settlement.
That outcome would allow Ankara to preserve continuity of influence and control within the FGS, regardless of who formally leads the next administration.
Masterful.
The Turkish government’s decision to publicly reaffirm support for @HassanSMohamud immediately after the expiration of his constitutional mandate, at a moment when Somalia faces a contested political transition and no agreed electoral framework, sends a deeply troubling political signal.
Somalis have long valued the historic relationship with Türkiye, built on solidarity and mutual respect. That relationship must remain anchored in support for the Somali people, constitutional governance, and inclusive political consensus, not personalized alignment with a single political figure during a fragile and contested transition.
Somalia’s stability cannot be sustained through external endorsement of expired mandates or concentration of power. Durable peace and stability require legitimacy, broad political agreement, accountable institutions, and public trust.
The sheer cruelty of the @HassanSMohamud’s administration is unparalleled. They forcibly removed this 👇🏾98-year-old grandmother from her home as part of their large scale land grabbing across #Mogadishu. She is among the estimated 300,000 of the most vulnerable residents whose properties were seized by the gov’t and sold to the highest bidder. Serious accountability is on the way. #Somalia
Next Friday is 15 May 2026: the last legitimate day of outgoing president Hassan Sheikhs term. In his last week, he must focus on finding an inclusive election model with all stakeholders. He must also release all illegally imprisoned civil society activists and journalists.
Türkiye – Somalia: A semi colonial relationship!
Five years ago, I wrote an opinion piece about the evolving relationship between Somalia and Türkiye. The essay pointed out the imbalance in the relationship and warned that the structure of the relationship did not bode well for Somalia and Somalis. Tragically, developments since then have vindicated the prognosis the essay made.
Our country is increasingly becoming a fiefdom for Türkiye interest and the derelict regime in Mogadishu behaves like a Bantustan.

A Saudi man married a Sudanese woman in Sudan and had a son with her. He then divorced her and took his son back to Saudi Arabia, telling him that his mother had died.
When the son grew up and was over thirty years old, the father confessed to him that his mother was alive.
That young man is Abdullah Khoujali, a player for the Saudi Al-Nassr football club. A satellite channel interviewed him after secretly bringing his mother from Sudan, surprising him with her presence. Watch the mother's first interview.
#Somalia is calling again.
When the military took power in 1969, it suspended the constitution, banned political parties, and closed all competitive political channels. Those with political ambitions crossed the border and organized clans to seize power by force. The result was a brutal civil war that began in 1978.
After 21 years of military rule and 10 years of state collapse, Somalis gathered in Arta and agreed to an incomplete political settlement aimed at reinstating the state. Given the experiences of the military dictatorship and subsequent chaos, Somalis became sensitive to anyone attempting to grasp power through illegal means. The most important message from the delegates was "never again to a dictatorship."
Consequently, the most important component of the political settlement was that there would be no security for regimes; when the mandate ends, there must be a transition, either through elections or Somali way/ political dispensation/ indirect elections. In practice, six presidents, Abdiqasim Salad Hassan, Abdullahi Yusuf Ahmed, Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, Hassan Sheikh Mohamud, Mohamed Abdullahi Mohamed "Farmajo," and Hassan Sheikh Mohamud have succeeded one another.
Unfortunately, after 25 years of the Third Republic, President @HassanSMohamud is openly engaged in power-grabbing beyond his mandate. Today, April 14, 2026, the four-year mandate of Parliament has ended. On May 15, 2026, the president's four-year term will also conclude. As of now, there is no political agreement among politicians regarding the upcoming transition. The president, using his Ministry of Truth, to borrow Orwell's doublespeak, wants to remain in power through fake elections and the support of well-meaning external partners.
This is unacceptable. It will undermine the achievements of the last 25 years, as well as Somali and international investments.
Mr. President: Your actions and inactions will deepen polarization and fragmentation. Please revert to the constitution that has given you your mandate and work with political groups to reach a political agreement as soon as possible. Stop arresting the citizens who are peacefully voicing their views.
Opposition Groups: Avoid a parallel process. Seek change through peaceful means.
Somali People: We all have a responsibility to peacefully say NO to power-grabbers, regardless of who they are.
International community and external partners: Please support the political transition and pressure all parties to agree on a way forward.
