An incredible opportunity presenting @MHB_Research in Kigali this week! Privileged to be part of a budding process of developing neuropsychology and neuroscience in Rwanda. @WitsUniversity@WitsNeuRL
A trailblazer in neuroimaging science - Prof Ernesta Meintjes - director of CUBIC @UCT_NI teaches us important lessons in academic humility and courage in establishing the first dedicated MRI research facility in sub-Saharan Africa! Check out her outstanding talk below ⬇️
2️⃣ 'Neither of us had ever done #MRI before, and now it’s been 15 years of MRI #imaging in South Africa' This inspiring talk reflects on the journey of neuroscience driving public health #innovation and #collaboration. 🎥https://t.co/iEg4EbdXFC #BrainhackSA#PublicHealth
Such an important award and piece to read that highlights the many structural inequalities and racial biases in our current neuroimaging (neurotechnology) methods.
These are global challenges, which are particularly pervasive in neuroscience research in Africa.
🎉 Congratulations to Jasmine Kwasa, winner of the 2024 NOMIS & Science Young Explorer Award for her work in addressing the underappreciated racial and phenotypic biases in neuroimaging methods by developing new, inclusive medical technologies. https://t.co/UvqR7tWae7
We also previously highlighted similar structural biases and proposed an equitable neuroscience framework in this invited Nature Communications commentary: https://t.co/FxySApTRQD
Thanks to the amazing work of @StephForkel & @NeuroAllies the talks from our all-star speaker lineup at our #SAbrainhack are now available online! Excited for some virtual feedback and engagement! https://t.co/J7Q47ZWIdN
🧠 Just wrapped up #Brainhack South Africa 2024! It was an incredible week of collaboration, learning, and innovation at the intersection of neuroscience, technology, and open science. Missed it? Don’t worry—we’ve got you covered with recorded talks! 🧵

A special aspect of #SAbrainhack was having @WitsUniversity Visiting Professor @DrSjBrooks from @LJMU there to represent dual perspectives - having lived and worked in neuroscience and neuroimaging in South Africa & the UK. She also rocked the fMRI hacking component!
A defining moment of our #SAbrainhack was @rachaeldangare1 talk speaking to the importance of positionality and subjective experience in the research process, while unpacking systemic inequalities in neuroscience that impact “African” based scientists.
A highlight of our #SAbrainhack was having Benjamin Bessières, PhD there as a representative from @CommsBio, with the @MichelTdS as section lead for the Cognitive and Computational Neuroscience Portfolio. Incredible to have on-site scientific engagement from the journal’s team!
It is sometimes easy to become disillusioned in academia, but people like this and meetings like this make it all worth it! Building a global vision together for neuroscience equity and innovation at #SABrainhack!
