I have written to the Foreign Secretary calling for an immediate statement given the escalation of state repression in Pakistan.
It is vital we ensure that democracy and the rule of law are upheld in Pakistan to prevent further unrest and violence.
I'm hearing of many concerning developments in #Pakistan.
Today, I addressed the issue of human rights in a statement to the Sindhi Foundation. Disappearances, forced conversions, and blasphemy laws have affected Pakistanis, and particularly Sindhis, for far too long. 1/3
Shooting civilians for peacefully expressing their will--disgraceful. The military's code of honor should not allow such violence against their own people. #Pakistan
Here is the Pakistan junta telegraphing its massacre and then carrying it out. These are the generals installed with the help of the United States and the U.S. is complicit
#Pakistan: The International Human Rights Foundation (IHRF) condemns the brutal use of force by the Pakistani state against peaceful protesters. Reports of extrajudicial abductions, political victimization, and transnational repression by the authoritarian regime in Pakistan continue to attract global attention. We urge the international community to respond to the military junta supported regime in Pakistan, which has come to power through an alleged massively rigged election. The U.S. House Resolution 901 ( H.Res.901 - Expressing support for democracy and human rights in Pakistan) calls for an independent inquiry into these elections. The current violent repression of unarmed protesters in Islamabad, along with the ongoing incarceration of former Prime Minister Imran Khan—who remains the most popular leader in the country—is unjustified. Officials in the Pakistani regime who are complicit in these acts of fascism must be held accountable. We call upon the Pakistani government to respect the human rights of its citizens.

PAKISTAN: The government must fully protect and ensure the rights of protesters and immediately rescind the ‘shoot-on-sight’ orders that provide undue and excessive powers to the military.
In response to protests by the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) in Islamabad, the authorities must exercise maximum restraint, aiming to prevent and de-escalate violence and to avoid the use of force.
Any use of force must be lawful and no more than is necessary and proportionate and the authorities must take all necessary measures to prevent arbitrary deprivation of life, including by ensuring that law enforcement actions are adequately planned to minimize the risk to life. There must also be effective accountability for any unlawful use of force.
The severe restrictions on assembly, movement and mobile and internet services as well as arbitrary detentions of thousands of protesters across Pakistan, particularly in Islamabad, are a grave violation of the rights to freedom of peaceful assembly, movement and expression.
As protesters enter the capital, law enforcement officials have used unlawful and excessive force including tear gas, live ammunition and rubber bullets against PTI protesters. Even if protests become non-peaceful, the authorities must respect and ensure the protesters’ rights to life and freedom from torture and other ill-treatment.
The Pakistani authorities have obligations under international human rights law to provide an enabling environment for the protesters. @amnesty urges the government to ensure that the right to freedom of peaceful assembly is respected and protected. Those detained solely for exercising their right to peaceful assembly must be released immediately.
Thousands of Pakistanis are protesting for democracy & are being met with violent repression. I am hearing reports that the government is using live fire & tear gas against protesters.
I condemn this violence & urge the government to allow these protests to continue peacefully.
The reported shoot-at-sight order to Pakistani soldiers to kill peaceful Pakistani demonstrators is a catastrophic mistake. This is not the way to enforce law and order. For the sake of #Pakistan and its future, the order must be rescinded immediately, and a reconciliation process, with assistance from Pakistan's friends, must start immediately. Will the Pakistani establishment change its current course and choose a wiser path?
The brutal repression of protesters in Pakistan and growing political violence is an attempt to suppress democracy and human rights.
I stand with the brave Pakistanis who are rising up and protesting for change.
