The Federal Government has launched the Youth in Agribusiness Land Trust Fund (YiALTF) in Abuja, a major initiative to boost youth participation in agriculture, expand access to land, and modernise agribusiness in Nigeria.

Speaking at the launch, the Honourable Minister of Youth Development, @ayowisdom_ , described YiALTF as a game-changing platform for youth empowerment, with integrated support including training, finance, technology, mentorship, and market access.

The programme will convert 42 Youth Development Centres into agribusiness hubs, train 6 million young Nigerians, and support 500,000 youth-led agribusiness enterprises nationwide.

Highlights of the launch include the presentation of ₦1 million grants each to 10 young farmers to scale up their agribusiness ventures.

YiALTF is expected to drive food security, job creation, and sustainable economic growth across Nigeria.

Today, CJID officially launched Countering Disinformation and Empowering Democracy in Northwestern Nigeria with support from the European Union.

The launch brought together government institutions, security actors, academia, media organisations, civil society groups, community leaders, and young people around one urgent reality: in fragile environments, disinformation goes beyond a media problem. It fuels fear, deepens mistrust, and can accelerate violence.

The 18-month intervention will focus on strengthening media literacy, fact-checking, OSINT, early-warning monitoring, community engagement, and local-language resilience initiatives across Northwestern Nigeria.🇳🇬

Disinformation continues to pose a growing threat to peace, trust, and democratic engagement across Northwestern Nigeria, making media and information literacy more important than ever.

Today, CJID kicked off a Training of Trainers workshop in Sokoto under the European Union (@EUinNigeria) funded “Countering Disinformation and Empowering Democracy in Northwestern Nigeria” project.

The workshop brings together stakeholders, teachers, and community actors to strengthen their understanding of disinformation, misinformation, digital manipulation, and the role of media literacy in protecting democratic values and social cohesion.

Through a series of practical sessions and engagements, participants will be equipped with the knowledge and tools needed to train their students and other individuals within their communities, helping to build a wider network of informed voices capable of identifying and countering false narratives.

The weeklong activity will also feature the official launch of the project, marking another important step toward promoting informed civic participation, democratic resilience, and peacebuilding across the region.

This year's commemoration comes at a critical moment marked by growing conflict, economic instability, shrinking funding for independent media, political repression, restrictive legal frameworks, regulatory pressures, rapid technological shifts, and increasing attacks against journalists. Across Africa, these challenges continue to be reflected in the growing number of attacks documented by the CJID Press Attack Tracker (PAT).

On this World Press Freedom Day, the CJID reaffirms its resolute commitment to defending free and independent journalism. Freedom of expression is the lifeblood of democracy, a fundamental right enshrined in national and international laws, and essential to the defense and enjoyment of all other human rights.

During the week under review, violent incidents across nine states in Nigeria resulted in over 121 fatalities, 31 abductions, and at least 29 injuries, alongside reports of widespread destruction of properties.

These incidents were concentrated in parts of the North West, North Central, and Northeast, highlighting persistent security challenges and their impact on local populations.

This snapshot underscores the urgent need for coordinated responses to protect lives, strengthen early warning systems, and support affected communities.
