@Innamo is right to call for a countywide tax reassessment and therefore has my vote. However, the Longtime Owner Occupants Program (LOOP) program she supports would make taxes less fair and less efficient. 1/3 https://t.co/EMlg3TS8eM
"SMALLER CLASSES, SMALLER CLASSES, SMALLER CLASSES", I've been hearing for my whole life.
But it turns out smaller classes don't help much. We should be spending that money on hiring BETTER teachers, not MORE teachers.

@CoreyLeander@rustbeltjacobin@EricLevitz No strong evidence for lots of homework, esp elementary. We rarely had much homework in Catholic school but all performed pretty well at the next level and were usually ahead of our peers in the first year of College. It's just not needed much.
@CoreyLeander@JGossman78@rustbeltjacobin@EricLevitz OP was about elementary school. All these studies are about college. Some homework is beneficial in high school and possibly beneficial in middle school, but there isn't evidence of benefit in elementary school.
@DominiqueJL15 I think there should be more shame directed at public schools that fail so badly that people would rather pay to go somewhere else than attend them for free.
@RyanDeto I don't think you should treat the 2014 study's conclusions as if they are definitely true. Other countries have been able to build high speed rail for much lower cost through mountainous areas.
@DogeMan1234567@JohnRTyndall@RyanDeto@Amtrak I think Pittsburgh to Cleveland is viable at existing speeds if there were three daily trains during daylight hours, but I agree with your general point.
@JohnRTyndall@RyanDeto@Amtrak It's more scalable than planes. New York and Philadelphia's airports are at capacity. Adding train capacity is much easier than Adding flight capacity at these airports.
The rules against speeding aren't just because *you * might make a mistake. They're there so that the results are less catastrophic when *other people* make a mistake. You can be the best driver in the world, but if somebody else makes a mistake and pulls out in front of you, the situation is much worse than it would other wise be if you're speeding because 1) you will have dramatically increased stopping distance; 2) the results of a collision will be much worse.
*You* don't get to say that this is a chance you're willing to take, because we're all on the road together.
Speeding selfishly imposes real risks on innocent people for what is really a pretty minor benefit.
That's why it's literally illegal.
