TIL the lovely blue color of our vintage Ball canning jars (as well as telegraph insulators of the same glass) comes from the distinctive mineral content of a single Indiana sand dune that was mined away to nothing in the early 20th century.
That's pretty wild.
The hypothetical dream two-book deal is one where you write the same book twice, once for a university press, carefully circumscribed argument dealing in detail with all the literature on the subject; then again for a trade press in absolutely shamelessly demagogic fashion
I’m certain that others have noticed the popular “two epigraph” trend, in which the first is something esoteric, perhaps from poetry, philosophy, or poetry, and the second is current and quippy. I’m trying to figure out how it emerged, and what the underlying motivations are.
Telling Zohran Mamdani that "we charge you with genocide" is a good way to render the designation meaningless (and signal that you are a fucking moron)
Can you tell if the ideas in a piece of writing are from a human or an AI?
As AI writing becomes more commonplace, emerging policies on AI use increasingly focus on who came up with the ideas in the text rather than who wrote the text. Modern AI detectors such as Pangram answer the latter question but not the former.
Introducing IdeaLens, a detector of AI ideas!
The best writers almost never write. Our standards are too high. Only mediocre writers can tolerate fiddling with an idea hatched shy of perfect; can stomach subjecting others to anything uninspired.
I saw someone post a dozen+ AI slop papers purporting to solve niche open problems. This is antisocial behaviour and worse than if the problems stayed open.
0 people understand the solution, and there is no readable writeup. Also, incentive for either is removed.
Vaccines will be ineffective against competently designed pandemic weapons. Russia may not be competent yet, but future AI will democratize competence.
We should stockpile pandemic-proof PPE and install germicidal far-UV and glycol misters in public spaces.

Former Chicago businessman Alphonse Capone, who rose to the top of the beverage distribution industry and was later jailed for violating tax laws, has died.
Obsessed with this van in my town owned by someone who is in a feud with a local car dealer (Pohanka) for not honoring the warranty on their van so they spite covered that same van front to back in stickers with bad reviews, emails from the owner, and “Puck Fohanka.”
10/10 Hater behavior.
