“I have a great deal of work to do.

I must train two hawks and two eagles,
calm two rabbits,
discipline a snake,
motivate a donkey,
and tame a lion.”

They looked around and said:
“But we don’t see any animals near you.”
The monk smiled and answered:
“We all carry these animals within us.”
“The two hawks throw themselves at everything they see — good or bad, useful or harmful.
I must teach them to distinguish between right and wrong.
Those are my eyes.
The two eagles tear apart everything they touch with their claws.
I must teach them to serve and help rather than destroy.
Those are my hands.
The rabbits constantly jump back and forth, hiding in fear.
I must calm them and teach them to face difficult situations instead of running away from problems.
Those are my feet.
The hardest to train is the snake.
Even locked inside a narrow cage, it is always ready to strike, bite, and poison anyone nearby.
I must discipline it carefully.
That is my tongue.
The donkey, as you know, is stubborn.
It is always tired and unwilling to do its work.
I must continually encourage and motivate it.
That is my body.
And finally, I must tame the lion — the one that wants to be king and rule over everyone.
It is proud, vain, and believes the whole world should revolve around it.
That is my ego.
So, as you can see…
I have plenty of work to do.”
