Steve Biko was not fooling around. If you are a Black parent of a teenager in today’s South Africa, please buy a copy of his book I Write What I Like, and read and discuss Biko’s writing and what it means in contemporary South Africa. I have returned to his book countless times because, sometimes, self-doubt creeps in.

Particularly the chapter titled “We Blacks.” It is a must-read for all. In one sentence, taking a serious jab at Black people, Biko wrote:

“In the privacy of his toilet his face twists in silent condemnation of white society but brightens up in sheepish obedience as he comes out hurrying in response to his master’s impatient call.”
